Water Infrastructure Maintenance Specialist II

Under general oversight, this role involves the operation of designated machinery and vehicles, including dump trucks, front-end loaders, compressors, and similar equipment, while executing specialized and routine maintenance tasks related to water systems. The position may also require operating backhoes as necessary for training and emergency situations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • As part of a specialized team, you will repair and replace damaged pipes, mains, valves, and hydrants using various tools and equipment such as pavement breakers, tapping machines, hydraulic and pneumatic boring machines, welding and cutting torches, and more.
  • Set up meter yokes, meter boxes, and related components as per work orders. Tap water mains for new services and deactivate services as necessary. Utilize heavy machinery for excavation, spoil removal, and backfill installation. Conduct repairs and rebuild fire hydrants and valves both in the field and workshop.
  • Engage with customers to explain project details, potential service interruptions, estimated completion times, and the steps involved in the work.
  • Operate system valves to manage supply shutdowns or service restorations. Utilize charts and locators to identify water mains and valves. Employ geophones to detect leaks. Collaborate with the Senior Water Infrastructure Maintenance Specialist to determine repair methods, service configurations, and pipe dimensions.
  • Assist in completing work orders and inventory records. Help with the necessary permits for confined space entry, trenching, shoring, and hot work. Source supplies and equipment from the department's storehouse. Adhere to all safety policies and procedures. Support the training of new staff. Participate in job investigations to ascertain utility locations, traffic signage, and coordination with property owners.
  • May supervise a crew and operate a backhoe regularly in the absence of a Senior Water Infrastructure Maintenance Specialist. While overseeing a crew, in collaboration with a Water Maintenance Supervisor, you will be responsible for the placement of traffic control barricades, trenching, and shoring devices. Conduct confined space and lockout/tagout evaluations in compliance with all safety regulations. Lead safety meetings and enforce on-site safety protocols. You will have the authority to halt work if safety standards are not upheld and will be accountable for compliance with safety regulations. May recommend disciplinary actions for crew members. Coordinate utility cuts in the field. Also operate backhoes for training or emergency purposes.
  • As required, perform all duties of Water Infrastructure Maintenance Specialist I and other assigned tasks.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid Utah Commercial Driver's License Class "A" and any required endorsements.
  • Three years of paid experience in water system maintenance and repair, either as a water maintenance worker or in water systems construction. Up to one year of paid general maintenance experience in closely related duties may be substituted. Two years as Water Infrastructure Maintenance Specialist I for the Public Utilities Department may meet the minimum qualifications when approved by the department.
  • Two years of paid experience operating related heavy machinery, including backhoes, 10-wheel dump trucks, and front-end loaders on a documented and continuous basis. Knowledge of safety rules related to equipment operation and the ability to be insured at standard premium rates.
  • Certification required, or ability to obtain within six months of hire, in Confined Space Entry, Trench and Shoring (Competent Person as defined by OSHA), Flagging and Traffic Control Device Placement, and Forklift Operation.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to emergencies, including 24-hour call-out and standby on a rotating schedule.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the public under varying job-related circumstances.
  • Must meet UDOT physical requirements.

Desired Qualification:

  • Certification as a Water Distribution Operator IV.

Exposure to various environmental elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, or grease. Significant exposure to health and occupational hazards.
  • Intermittent exposure to stress due to human behavior.
  • This position may involve shift work, extensive overtime, callouts, standby, or rotating shift schedules.
