Job Overview:

The Salt Lake City Public Utilities Department is in search of proficient individuals to become part of our committed workforce as Water Meter Readers. In this capacity, you will be tasked with the precise reading of both small and large compound water meters across residential and commercial routes. This role involves fieldwork that necessitates driving and may expose you to various occupational hazards. You will accurately document meter readings utilizing a laptop and VXU data collection system, report any discrepancies, and engage courteously with customers to address their questions and concerns.

Key Responsibilities:

As a Water Meter Reader, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Receiving route assignments and driving to designated locations to read meters on foot.
  • Reporting unsafe conditions and verifying meter details.
  • Entering data into handheld devices and making precise recordings of meter readings.
  • Observing and reporting maintenance needs, illegal connections, and unusual consumption patterns.
  • Responding to inquiries from residents and business owners regarding meter readings.
  • Backtracking to read missed meters and performing minor maintenance tasks.
  • Maintaining your vehicle in a clean and safe condition.

This position requires outdoor work in various weather conditions and the ability to effectively communicate with the public, colleagues, and supervisors.

Compensation and Benefits:

This position is eligible for full city benefits, including:

Minimum Qualifications:

ALL WATER METER READER LEVELS:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license or driving privilege card.
  • Ability to locate water meters using property descriptions or maps, read water meters, and perform simple calculations as necessary.
  • Ability to work outdoors under varying weather conditions and adhere to a reading schedule.
  • Ability to effectively interact with the general public, co-workers, and supervisors.

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATION FOR WATER METER READER II:

  • Six (6) months of meter reading experience.
  • Familiarity with commercial meter routes.

Working Conditions:

  • Moderately heavy physical activity, with potential exposure to various environmental elements.
  • Intermittent exposure to stress due to human behavior.

Career Advancement:

After six months of successful performance as a Water Meter Reader I, individuals may be promoted to Water Meter Reader II based on supervisor recommendations and departmental reviews.
