GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Under the general oversight of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the professional is responsible for administering life-sustaining treatments, resuscitation, monitoring, and various therapeutic gases to patients. This role involves conducting both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic assessments for patients in Intensive Care and General Practice Units. The individual maintains clinical proficiency for departmental assignments across various business units as designated. Effective communication with patients, colleagues, physicians, and other system personnel regarding patient care requirements is essential. Comprehensive documentation of all patient care activities is required. The role also includes supervising, guiding, and delegating tasks to Respiratory Therapists, trainees, externs, and students as necessary. Accurate patient billing information must be completed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts patient evaluations, develops care plans, and collaborates with other healthcare professionals. Patient care constitutes 100% of work hours.
  • Delegates appropriate aspects of patient care to support staff (including Respiratory Therapists, trainees, externs, and students), ensuring effective communication and guidance.
  • Acts as a collaborative team member in patient care and provides mentorship to other staff.
  • Engages with colleagues and other professionals, including physicians and nurses, to ensure optimal patient care. Actively participates in daily bedside rounds.
  • Upholds high standards of clinical excellence in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in various departmental specialties, clinical areas, life support, diagnostic, and monitoring equipment as assigned. Shows competency in specialized procedures and protocols, working across multiple inpatient locations as needed.
  • Maintains clinical productivity standards.
  • Enhances technical clinical expertise through professional associations and educational initiatives.
  • Stays informed on developments in Respiratory Therapy by attending conferences, participating in in-services, staff meetings, and peer reviews.
  • Performs specific duties as determined by site assignments, which may include cleaning, maintaining, repairing, and testing equipment.
  • Documents patient care promptly and in accordance with departmental standards.
  • Maintains awareness of patient safety issues within the clinical environment and in the use of equipment.
  • Ensures patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA policies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapist program.
  • Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy preferred; minimum of an Associate of Science Degree.
  • Recent graduates of a Respiratory Therapy program or two years of recent experience in a Tertiary Hospital.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

  • Registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care.
  • Current Respiratory Therapist License in the State of Michigan.
  • Newly graduated therapists will have a 90-day period from graduation to complete their registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care and obtain a State of Michigan Respiratory Therapist License. Failure to do so may result in termination.
  • Must meet or exceed core customer service responsibilities, standards, and behaviors as outlined in the organization's Customer Service Policy.
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills as provided through ongoing training and in-services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in a patient care setting and blood-analysis laboratories with potential exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Responsibilities include washing, cleaning, and disinfecting soiled medical equipment.
  • Involves working with pressurized piped-in and bottled medical gases.
  • Improper lifting, moving, and use of equipment could result in personal, patient, and/or equipment injury.
  • Must be able to consistently move, lift patients, assist in pushing patients on hospital beds, and transport heavy equipment throughout the facility.
  • Limited noise, temperature fluctuations, and dust may be present.
