GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the general oversight of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the professional is responsible for delivering critical life-support, resuscitation, monitoring, and various medical gas therapies to patients. This role involves performing both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic procedures for patients in Intensive Care and General Practice Units. The therapist maintains clinical expertise across departmental assignments at various business units as designated. Effective communication with patients, colleagues, physicians, and other system personnel regarding patient care needs is essential. All aspects of patient care must be documented accurately and comprehensively. The role also includes supervising, directing, and delegating tasks to Respiratory Therapists, interns, externs, and students as required. Accurate patient billing information must be completed as necessary.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducts patient assessments, develops care plans, and collaborates with other healthcare professionals. Patient care constitutes 100% of work hours.
  • Delegates patient care responsibilities appropriately to support staff (including Respiratory Therapists, interns, externs, and students), ensuring effective communication and guidance.
  • Acts as a collaborative team member in patient care and mentoring other staff.
  • Engages in communication with colleagues and other professionals, including physicians and nurses, to ensure optimal patient care, and actively participates in daily bedside rounds.
  • Upholds high standards of clinical excellence in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in various departmental subspecialties, clinical areas, life support, diagnostic, and monitoring equipment as assigned. Displays competency in special procedures and protocols, working across multiple inpatient locations as required.
  • Maintains clinical productivity standards.
  • Enhances technical clinical expertise through professional associations and ongoing educational activities.
  • Stays informed on developments in Respiratory Therapy by attending conferences, participating in in-services, staff meetings, and peer review/chart reviews as appropriate.
  • Performs specific duties based on site assignments, which may include cleaning, maintaining, repairing, and testing equipment.
  • Documents patient care promptly and in compliance with departmental standards.
  • Maintains awareness of patient safety issues within the clinical environment and in the use of equipment.
  • Ensures patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA policies.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapist program.
  • Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy preferred; minimum of an Associate of Science Degree.
  • Recent graduates of a Respiratory Therapy program or two years of recent experience in a Tertiary Hospital.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

  • Registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care.
  • Current Respiratory Therapist License in the State of Michigan.
  • Newly graduated therapists will have a grace period of 90 days from graduation to complete their registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care and obtain a State of Michigan Respiratory Therapist License. Failure to do so may result in termination.
  • Must meet or exceed core customer service responsibilities, standards, and behaviors as outlined in the organization's Customer Service Policy.
  • Must practice customer service skills as provided through ongoing training and in-services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is performed in a patient care setting and blood-analysis laboratories with potential exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Responsibilities include washing, cleaning, and disinfecting soiled medical equipment.
  • Involves working with pressurized piped-in and bottled medical gases.
  • Improper lifting, moving, and use of equipment could result in personal, patient, and/or equipment injury.
  • Must be capable of frequently moving, lifting patients, assisting in pushing patients on hospital beds, and relocating heavy equipment throughout the facility.
  • Limited noise, temperature fluctuations, and dust may be present.
