GENERAL OVERVIEW:

Under the guidance of the Respiratory Therapy Supervisor, the professional is responsible for delivering critical life-support services, resuscitation, monitoring, and administering various medical gas therapies to patients. This role includes performing both invasive and non-invasive diagnostic assessments for patients in Intensive Care and General Practice Units. The therapist will maintain clinical proficiency across different departmental assignments as designated. Effective communication with patients, colleagues, physicians, and other healthcare personnel regarding patient care is essential. Comprehensive documentation of all patient care activities is required. The role also involves supervising and directing Respiratory Therapists, orienting new staff, externs, and students as necessary, and ensuring accurate patient billing information is completed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct thorough patient assessments, develop care plans, and collaborate with other healthcare professionals. Patient care constitutes 100% of work hours.
  • Delegate appropriate patient care tasks to support staff (including Respiratory Therapists, externs, and students), ensuring clear communication and guidance.
  • Actively participate as a team member in patient care and mentor other staff members.
  • Engage in effective communication with co-workers and other professionals, including physicians and nurses, to guarantee optimal patient care. Attend and contribute to daily bedside rounds.
  • Uphold high standards of clinical excellence in accordance with departmental policies.
  • Exhibit proficiency in various departmental specialties, clinical areas, life support systems, and diagnostic equipment as assigned. Demonstrate competency in specialized procedures and protocols, working across multiple locations as required.
  • Meet clinical productivity benchmarks.
  • Enhance technical clinical expertise through professional associations and educational initiatives.
  • Stay informed about advancements in Respiratory Therapy by attending conferences, participating in in-services, staff meetings, and peer reviews.
  • Perform specific duties as dictated by site assignments, which may include cleaning, maintaining, repairing, and testing equipment.
  • Document patient care promptly and in line with departmental standards.
  • Maintain awareness of patient safety issues within the clinical environment and in the operation of equipment.
  • Ensure patient confidentiality in accordance with established HIPAA policies.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program.
  • Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy preferred; minimum of an Associate of Science Degree required.
  • Recent graduates of a Respiratory Therapy program or those with two years of recent experience in a tertiary hospital setting.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:

  • Registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care.
  • Current State License as a Respiratory Therapist in Michigan.
  • Newly graduated therapists will have a 90-day period post-graduation to secure their registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care and obtain a Michigan Respiratory Therapist License; failure to do so may result in termination.
  • Must meet or exceed core customer service responsibilities and standards as outlined in the organization's Customer Service Policy.
  • Must practice customer service skills as provided through ongoing training and in-services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in patient care settings and laboratories with potential exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Responsibilities include washing, cleaning, and disinfecting medical equipment.
  • Work involves handling pressurized piped-in and bottled medical gases.
  • Improper lifting, moving, and equipment use could lead to personal, patient, or equipment injury.
  • Must be capable of frequently moving and lifting patients, assisting in transporting patients on hospital beds, and maneuvering heavy equipment throughout the facility.
  • Exposure to limited noise, temperature variations, and dust may occur.
