Position Overview:

The Academic Advisor plays a crucial role in offering educational guidance and career counseling to students within designated areas of expertise. This role involves collaborating closely with faculty and staff to assist students in navigating their academic journeys. The primary objective is to uphold institutional standards concerning student enrollment, retention, and graduation rates.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Deliver personalized academic advising to both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students; collaborate with students to ensure timely completion of their degree requirements while focusing on their academic and career success. Partner with division faculty and staff to create advisement strategies tailored to program requirements and student needs.
  2. Interpret and communicate federal, state, and institutional policies to faculty, students, and staff in a professional manner. Maintain an up-to-date understanding of academic policies, procedures, and processes, including those related to accreditations and certifications for specific degree programs.
  3. Assist students in developing their schedules and registering for courses (including drops, adds, and withdrawals). Educate students on following a degree plan and utilizing online enrollment systems.
  4. Advise students considering transferring to other institutions on matters related to course transfers, degree options, and long-term career aspirations.
  5. Evaluate transcripts from other educational institutions for equivalencies and their applicability to degree programs. Collaborate with faculty and Registrar Services to maintain a comprehensive database of transfer course equivalencies.
  6. Guide students regarding the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP). Prepare and monitor educational plans for students in compliance with institutional and federal regulations.
  7. Enhance student awareness of campus resources and programs that enrich their college experience. Make referrals to community resources as necessary.
  8. Act as a liaison between the academic advisement team and other functional areas on campus. Share information regarding assigned specialties or areas of focus as required.
  9. Contribute to campus-wide efforts aimed at improving student retention and graduation rates. Develop and implement strategies specifically targeting students within assigned specialties.
  10. Support recruitment and student engagement initiatives. Present information and distribute materials to current and prospective students as needed.
  11. Encourage degree completion by assisting students with degree audits, My Academic Plans (MAPs), and graduation applications.
  12. Ensure the confidentiality of student records and adhere to policies related to student privacy.
  13. Participate in Advisement Team meetings, trainings, campus committees, and ongoing professional development opportunities.
  14. Engage in continuous departmental documentation and process improvement efforts; demonstrate an understanding of this position's role in campus semester plans, standard operating procedures, and key performance indicators.
  15. Complete all mandatory training and participate in a minimum of two professional development activities each year.
  16. Perform additional duties as assigned.
