Position Overview:
The Academic Advisor is responsible for delivering academic guidance and career support to students within designated areas of expertise. This role necessitates collaboration with faculty and administrative staff to assist students in their educational journeys. The primary focus is to uphold institutional standards concerning student enrollment, retention, and graduation rates.
Key Responsibilities:
- Offer academic counseling to both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students; collaborate with students to devise strategies for timely completion of academic requirements while emphasizing their academic and career success. Partner with division faculty and staff to create advisement strategies tailored to program requirements and student needs.
- Interpret and communicate federal, state, and institutional policies to faculty, students, and staff in a professional manner. Maintain an up-to-date understanding of academic policies, procedures, and processes, including those related to accreditation and certification for specific degree programs.
- Assist students in developing their schedules and managing course registrations (including drops, adds, and withdrawals). Educate students on following degree plans and utilizing online enrollment systems.
- Advise students intending to transfer to other institutions regarding course transfer issues, degree options, and long-term career aspirations.
- Evaluate transcripts from other educational institutions for equivalencies and their applicability to degree programs. Collaborate with faculty and Registrar Services to maintain a comprehensive database of transfer course equivalencies.
- Guide students regarding the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP). Prepare and oversee student educational plans in accordance with institutional and federal regulations.
- Enhance student awareness of campus resources and programs that enrich their college experience. Make referrals to community resources as necessary.
- Act as a liaison between the academic advisement team and other campus functional areas. Share information related to assigned specialties or areas of focus as required.
- Contribute to campus-wide initiatives aimed at improving student retention and graduation rates. Develop and implement strategies specifically targeting students within assigned specialties.
- Support recruitment and student engagement initiatives. Deliver presentations and distribute information to current and prospective students as needed.
- Encourage degree completion and assist students with degree audits, My Academic Plans (MAPs), and graduation applications.
- Ensure the confidentiality of student records and adhere to policies regarding student privacy (FERPA).
- Participate in Advisement Team meetings, training sessions, campus committees, and ongoing professional development opportunities.
- Engage in continuous departmental documentation and process improvement efforts; demonstrate an understanding of this position's role in campus semester plans, standard operating procedures, and key performance indicators.
- Complete all mandatory training and participate in at least two professional development activities each year.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
