Position Overview
The Financial Aid Advisor I plays a crucial role in assisting students throughout the financial aid journey. This position involves providing guidance, awarding financial aid, and verifying eligibility for students.

The advisor collaborates with various academic departments to manage scholarship allocations and will focus on specific schools within the institution.


The Financial Aid Advisor I reports directly to the Associate Director of Financial Aid and is an integral member of the Financial Aid Services team.

Minimum Qualifications


At least one year of experience in financial aid operations, including processing applications, managing student loans, or related functions.

Familiarity with financial aid management systems is advantageous.

The candidate must maintain good standing with all federal student loans and grants.

Preferred Qualifications


A high school diploma or equivalent is mandatory.

A bachelor's degree is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

- Uphold the values and mission of the department and institution in all interactions.


- Engage with prospective and current students and their families to explain financial aid processes and provide counseling on required documentation.


- Stay informed about financial aid regulations and changes at the federal and state levels.

Maintain a thorough understanding of FERPA regulations concerning student information.


- Deliver exceptional customer service to students, parents, faculty, and staff both in-person and via phone.
- Review and verify student applications and documentation as they are submitted.

Communicate with students regarding any discrepancies or additional information needed.


- Manage general email correspondence for the Financial Aid Office.
- Assess academic progress for incoming transfer students.

Package financial aid for students within designated alphabetical ranges and manage scholarship allocations in accordance with guidelines.


- Develop a comprehensive understanding of university tuition, fees, and housing costs as they relate to financial aid packages.


- Address and resolve any disputes or issues related to student accounts in a fair and effective manner.


- Present financial aid information during orientation sessions for transfer students.


- Participate in recruitment events representing the Financial Aid Office.


- Process emergency loans at the start of each term.


- Ensure scholarship awards are accurately posted to student accounts, verifying eligibility criteria.


- Collaborate with Enrollment Services, Student Accounts, and Registrars to resolve student concerns.
- Assist in updating office materials and procedures as necessary.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Note:

During the training period, the Financial Aid Advisor will be evaluated to identify strengths in various areas of financial aid, with additional responsibilities assigned accordingly.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Understanding of student financial aid processes and student account management.


- Knowledge of Veteran Affairs Benefits and Services is required (can be learned on the job).


- Ability to handle confidential information discreetly.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage with diverse populations.
- Proficient in English, with strong problem-solving capabilities.
- Familiarity with accounting principles and basic computational skills.
- Proficient in computer applications, including MS Office.
- Ability to work independently with a high level of accuracy and accountability.
The position may involve working in a standard office environment with typical office equipment and requires the ability to communicate effectively with university constituents.
