Stanford, California, United States Wing Full time
About Wing:

Wing provides drone delivery as a safe, efficient, and eco-friendly solution for last-mile logistics. As consumer demand for on-demand services grows, traditional delivery methods remain inefficient, costly, and contribute to traffic accidents and environmental pollution. Wing's fleet of highly automated delivery drones can transport small packages directly from businesses to homes on-demand, in mere minutes. We design, construct, and operate our aircraft, offering drone delivery services across three continents. Our technology is crafted to seamlessly integrate into existing delivery and logistics frameworks, providing a scalable drone delivery solution for a wide array of businesses. Wing is a subsidiary of Alphabet, Google's parent company, and our mission is to establish the preferred delivery method for the planet. To achieve this, we aim to build a workforce that reflects the diverse global communities we serve. If you're prepared to engage in transformative work, we invite you to join us.

About the Role:

Wing is seeking a Lead Simulation Systems Engineer to become part of our Simulation team. This pivotal role focuses on ensuring the reliability and scalability of our simulation software infrastructure. The ideal candidate will possess proven experience in developing and maintaining production systems and the capability to deliver results within a dynamic, cross-functional team environment.

Simulation is a fundamental technology for Wing, enabling the testing of systems across numerous scenarios at a large scale. It plays a central role in Wing's development workflow, providing rapid feedback for research and development as well as business impact. Furthermore, through continuous verification, simulation is essential for ensuring our fleet of autonomous aircraft meets customer expectations.

As a Lead Simulation Systems Engineer, you will be tasked with developing scalable simulation software infrastructure that supports the continuous integration and deployment of Wing's software and hardware systems. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to define simulation requirements and comprehend their needs to expedite R&D. A significant aspect of the role will involve designing tools for monitoring, analysis, and visualization of simulation outcomes, along with implementing continuous verification strategies.

What You'll Do:

Design and construct intuitive, interpretable simulation systems that facilitate rapid iteration and validation of new features and algorithms, thus accelerating Wing's R&D cycles.
  • Engineer a robust and scalable simulation infrastructure capable of managing millions of simulations daily, providing meaningful insights while ensuring efficient resource utilization.
  • Lead initiatives to integrate real-world flight data into simulation environments, enhancing the accuracy and realism of simulated scenarios. Optimize data pipelines for seamless data incorporation.
  • Collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, operations, and UX teams to develop user-friendly simulation tools that simplify setup, execution, analysis, and visualization, seamlessly integrating into existing workflows.
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive testing infrastructure that enables continuous verification of Wing's software and hardware systems, minimizing human intervention and maximizing confidence in system reliability.
  • Mentor and guide simulation team members through code reviews, design discussions, and collaborative projects. Share best practices and knowledge to elevate the entire team's capabilities.
What You'll Need:
  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Physics, Math, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 8+ years of professional experience in software design and development.
  • Experience in developing backend systems using C++.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with internal teams and deliver solutions that meet their needs.
  • Experience in mentorship or managing small teams.
  • Experience in building developer productivity tools.
  • Experience in constructing large-scale autonomous vehicle fleet simulation pipelines.
  • Passion for infrastructure work: developing internal solutions, building pipelines, and core frameworks.
  • Enthusiasm for aviation and the development of new technologies.
  • Knowledge of production technologies.
  • Experience in software quality assurance, particularly in verification and validation testing.
