The City of Henderson is conducting an examination to establish an eligibility list and fill a vacancy for the role of Fire Protection Engineer I/II within the Department of Building/Fire Safety and Development Services Center. *The department is open to hiring candidates qualified at any level within this series. The eligibility list may be utilized to fill vacancies for this classification for up to one year.

Under general supervision, the incumbent will plan and execute engineering evaluations, calculations, and research. Responsibilities include reviewing intricate construction documents to ensure compliance with fire and building code provisions, as well as Federal and State regulations, and local codes; along with performing related duties as assigned.

This role is recognized as the entry-level position in the Fire Protection Engineer series. The Fire Protection Engineer I (EIT) does not necessitate registration as a Professional Engineer. Employees may be eligible for non-competitive advancement to Fire Protection Engineer II upon obtaining licensure as a Professional Engineer with the State of Nevada and fulfilling all requirements for the Fire Protection Engineer II position.

Position Information:
  • The initial salary for the successful candidate will be determined based on experience and education, along with other internal factors.
  • The City of Henderson participates in the Nevada Public Employee Retirement Systems (NV PERS) and contributes to PERS on behalf of employees.
  • Standard working hours for this position are Monday - Thursday from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • This position may allow for remote work up to two days per week; however, at least 50% of work time must be conducted in-person.
  • Work schedules and remote work opportunities are subject to change.
  • Remote work options are available only to employees who have completed their probationary period.

Minimum Qualifications

Fire Protection Engineer I (EIT) Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution with a focus in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Two (2) years of relevant, diversified experience in the fire protection engineering domain, or an equivalent combination of related training and experience.
  • Must possess valid registration as an Engineer in Training (EIT) or proof of completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Examination at the time of application, with the ability to obtain EIT registration within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must have the capability to secure registration as a Professional Engineer within the State of Nevada.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Nevada or 'border state' driver's license as defined by NRS 483.
Fire Protection Engineer II Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution with a focus in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the fire protection engineering field.
  • Must possess valid registration as a Professional Engineer with the State of Nevada at the time of application, or the ability to obtain such registration through reciprocity within six (6) months of hire as a condition of continued employment.
  • Certifications:
    • Must obtain and maintain certification as a Building Plans Examiner from the International Code Council (ICC) within two (2) years of hire as a condition of continued employment.
    • Must obtain and maintain certification as a Fire Plans Examiner from the International Code Council (ICC) within two (2) years of hire as a condition of continued employment.
    • Must obtain and maintain certification as a Certified Fire Code Official within three (3) years of hire as a condition of continued employment.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Nevada or 'border state' driver's license as defined by NRS 483.
  • Desirable: Certification as a Fire Inspector II from the International Code Council (ICC).
  • Desirable: Experience as a fire plans examiner or fire protection engineer, including design or plan review of complex fire alarm, sprinkler, and smoke control systems, and hazardous materials.
