Job Summary

The Staff Electrical Engineer is a key member of our team at Burns & McDonnell, responsible for leading or executing power system protection and control engineering projects. These projects range in size, complexity, and voltage class from small distribution equipment upgrades to large transmission projects.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Execute complex assignments requiring the use of advanced electrical engineering techniques, resulting in the development of new or improved processes, equipment, and/or technological methods.
  • Coordinate departmental or divisional project studies, reports, or project design assignments.
  • Perform power system studies and system protection settings coordination on various projects (Up to 500-kV voltage level).
  • Develop design basis documentation for protective settings and general native relay configuration files.
  • Conduct design reviews, and support quality control.
  • Assist in project manager to develop scope of work and conceptual design for the projects.
  • Train, guide, and mentor less experienced team members.
  • Support business development and marketing initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a directly related field plus three (3) years of experience in electrical systems studies in the electric utility or industrial power distribution industry.
  • Will accept a Master's degree plus two (2) years of related experience in lieu of Bachelor's degree plus three (3) years of related experience.
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer licensure.

Preferred Experience/Skills:

  • Previous experience in development of protective relay settings in Transmission, or Distribution industry.
  • Prior experience in commonly utilized system modelling software programs (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM, etc.).
  • Knowledge of protection schemes and philosophies commonly applied at Transmission, and Distribution substations.
  • Developing native relay setting files using SEL's AcSELerator and GE's Enervista software programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical single lines, three lines, schematics, functional diagrams, etc.
  • Designing calculations, including short circuit calculation, current transformer performance and ratio selection, over-current element coordination, zone-distance element selection and coordination, and relay load ability calculation.
  • Ability to perform Grounding, Arc Flash, and other Power system studies is a plus.
  • Providing engineering support with construction and commissioning activities for substation.
  • A Professional Engineer licensure, or the pursuit of it, is strongly preferred.
