We are in search of a highly qualified Director of Medical Coding to lead our coding division. This role is based in Nashville or Columbia, TN, and candidates must reside within a commutable distance. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of medical coding practices and regulations, coupled with experience in managing a coding team. The Director of Medical Coding will ensure the accuracy and compliance of all coding activities with industry standards while providing educational support to physicians, mid-level providers, clinical staff, and revenue cycle teams. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to engage confidently with providers and clinical team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel Requirement: 25-50% travel within middle Tennessee is necessary for provider feedback sessions and training.
  • Adhere to directives from the Chief Revenue Officer regarding all coding responsibilities.
  • Manage the daily functions of the medical coding department.
  • Guarantee that all coding practices are accurate and adhere to industry regulations.
  • Formulate and implement policies and procedures for the coding department.
  • Educate and mentor coding staff to keep them informed on the latest coding practices and regulations.
  • Collaborate with various departments to ensure seamless integration of coding within the healthcare process.
  • Analyze coding trends and identify opportunities for enhancement.
  • Ensure timely completion of all coding tasks.
  • Maintain precise records of all coding activities.
  • Provide training and education to providers, clinical staff, coding personnel, and other members of the revenue cycle team.
  • Assist in developing, documenting, and sustaining an effective coding education program.
  • Conduct meetings with physicians and mid-level providers to review charts, analyze coding patterns, and identify revenue enhancement opportunities.
  • Support onboarding processes for new providers, including audits, documentation reviews, and coding accuracy assessments.
  • Deliver ongoing education on ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Establish standards and guidelines for medical record documentation, including reporting deficiencies and providing training for remediation.
  • Coordinate with the Compliance Manager on coding documentation issues as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of managerial experience in a coding team, with extensive knowledge of ICD-10, CPT-4, and HCPCS II coding systems.
  • Certification/Licensure: CPC or CCS-P certification or equivalent, with ongoing maintenance of continuing education requirements.
  • Experience in providing coding education to coding staff, physicians, and mid-level providers.
  • Team-oriented and adaptable.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
