We are in search of a highly qualified Director of Medical Coding to lead our coding division. This role is primarily based out of our Nashville or Columbia, TN locations and requires proximity for commuting. The ideal candidate will possess extensive expertise in medical coding practices and regulations, coupled with experience in managing a team of coding professionals. The Director of Medical Coding will ensure the accuracy and compliance of all medical coding with industry standards while providing educational training to physicians, mid-level providers, clinical staff, and revenue cycle teams. Exceptional verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to engage confidently with providers and clinical team members.

Key Responsibilities

  • Travel Requirement: 25-50% travel within middle Tennessee is necessary for provider feedback meetings and training sessions.
  • Follow directives from the Chief Revenue Officer regarding all coding responsibilities.
  • Oversee daily operations within the medical coding department.
  • Ensure compliance and accuracy of all medical coding practices.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for the coding department.
  • Train and mentor coding staff to keep them informed of the latest coding standards and regulations.
  • Collaborate with various departments to integrate medical coding into the overall healthcare workflow.
  • Monitor coding trends and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure timely completion of all coding tasks.
  • Maintain accurate records of coding activities.
  • Provide educational sessions for providers, clinical team members, coding staff, and other revenue cycle personnel.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of an effective coding education program.
  • Conduct meetings with physicians and mid-level providers for chart reviews and coding assessments.
  • Support onboarding processes for new providers, including audits and documentation reviews.
  • Deliver ongoing education on ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Establish standards for medical record documentation and report on deficiencies.
  • Coordinate with the Compliance Manager on coding documentation issues as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of managerial experience in a coding team with in-depth knowledge of ICD-10, CPT-4, and HCPCS II coding systems.
  • Certification/Licensure: CPC or CCS-P certification or equivalent, with ongoing education maintenance.
  • Experience in providing coding education to staff, physicians, and mid-level providers.
  • Team-oriented and adaptable.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities.
