JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


Overview: The Student Disability Resources (SDR) department is looking to hire a Remediation Specialist to assist in the preparation of accessible educational materials for students associated with our office.

This is a part-time and fully remote role. While the hours for this position are flexible, we encourage staff to maintain consistency in their schedules.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Content Preparation: Gather course materials from various sources including Canvas, the Penn State Library, databases, publishers, and other platforms.
  • Convert files among different formats (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, PDF, Text, HTML, etc.).
  • Organize and modify content based on individual student requirements.
  • Deliver completed content to students after receiving management approval.

Accessibility Remediation for Visually Impaired Students:
  • Conduct audits on content for accessibility.
  • Modify (i.e., format) content according to student needs.

Specific Remediation Tasks Include:
  • Adjusting headings and adding page numbers.
  • Writing descriptive text for images, charts, graphs, videos, and other visual media.
  • Inserting and editing footnotes and tables.
  • Creating and formatting equations in accessible formats.
  • Providing tactile graphics (i.e., raised line drawings) for images as required.

Project Management:
  • Utilize the team's project management tools to actively track tasks.
  • Prioritize assignments based on due dates.

Qualifications:
  • Consistent access to a reliable internet connection.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to attend scheduled meetings.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt.
  • Attention to detail.

Highly Preferred:
  • Experience in remediating or formatting digital materials for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
  • Familiarity with the Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Knowledge of HTML and LaTex.
  • Experience with Assistive Technology.
  • Understanding of digital accessibility standards, such as the Web Accessibility Content Guidelines (WCAG).
