Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Geotechnical Engineer Assistant to join our team at Burns & McDonnell. As a Geotechnical Engineer Assistant, you will work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer to assist project teams in creating world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist project teams in geotechnical design and planning, adapting plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.
  • Conduct geotechnical hazard assessments, slope stability analyses, calculations, and design of mitigation alternatives.
  • Modify and review production drawings for various projects, including power plants, electric transmission and distribution, process facilities, industrial facilities, healthcare facilities, airports, educational institutions, commercial, and governmental and military facilities.
  • Design geotechnical components for project needs and requirements set forth by project managers.
  • Apply basic knowledge of commonly used geotechnical engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the geotechnical engineering services industry.
  • Assist with subsurface investigations, including test boring inspection, installing and monitoring instrumentation.
  • Research and compile project-related data as required by project managers.
  • Assist with client presentations and contract administration for the design of power, process, pipeline, industrial, healthcare, airports, educational institutions, commercial, and governmental and military facilities.
  • Assist in geotechnical-related construction observation during the construction phase of projects.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program required.
  • Master's degree in Geotechnical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program strongly preferred.
  • Successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
  • Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
  • Involvement on campus or in the community.
  • Basic knowledge in standard geotechnical engineering techniques, principles, and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including geotechnical analysis programs.
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
