Under the guidance of the Site Supervisor, the Certified Educator is accountable for the comprehensive daily academic programming, discipline, direct oversight, and management of a designated group of children in a licensed childcare/day camp environment as assigned by the Program Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  • The Certified Educator is responsible for the academic instruction and program enhancement, which includes the implementation of curriculum and homework support. This may involve daily group programming, discipline, direct supervision, and management of 10-20 children in the after-school program.
  • Review, implement, and lead academic and project-based learning activities aligned with the contract scope of work, as specified by the grant-funding agency.
  • Plan, supervise, and execute activities for the assigned group of children in accordance with age-appropriate and developmentally suitable practices as outlined by the licensing agency, State of Florida, and the YMCA of South Florida mission and Child Care Personnel Policies by submitting outcome data and curricula/lesson plans to the Lead Teacher/Curriculum Specialist and/or Program Director in a timely and organized manner.
  • Conduct and maintain necessary measurable tools to monitor participant progress.
  • Follow established emergency procedures appropriate to the facility and in accordance with protocols adopted by the YMCA of South Florida and emergency service authorities to ensure the safety of children.
  • Maintain the quality of supplies, equipment, and materials, ensuring that supplies are adequately stocked by reporting re-order needs to the Site Supervisor and Lead Teacher/Curriculum Specialist.
  • Conduct regular inspections of areas utilized by the program to ensure cleanliness and safety.
  • Maintain close coordination with facility personnel for the safety and benefit of children in the program.
  • Document behavioral issues and/or incidents daily, as necessary.
  • Report notable health concerns of each child daily, noting fever, bumps, bruises, burns, or other signs of potential abuse, and document the incident with the Site Supervisor. Report all incidents and accidents immediately to the Site Supervisor.
  • Adhere to Child Abuse & Neglect Reporting requirements, which mandate that all childcare personnel report suspicions of child abuse, neglect, or abandonment. The YMCA requires employees to follow internal reporting procedures with the assistance of the Program Directors.
  • Ensure that the appropriate staff-to-child ratios are maintained at all times and report discrepancies to the Site Supervisor as needed.
Time Management:
  • 90% of the schedule involves hands-on responsibilities.
  • 50% - Focused on executing Association protocols and performance metrics; team performance; reduction in cancellations.
  • 40% - Customer Service.
  • 10% - Administrative duties (scheduling, payroll, etc.).
Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:

Education and Experience:
  • A Bachelor's Degree or higher and possess a valid Florida Teaching Certificate.
  • One (1) to Three (3) years of experience in a licensed childcare/day camp facility or educational institution, which includes direct contact with children.
  • Ability to relate to individuals; understand and practice YMCA Character Development values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • The Certified Educator of the after-school program must be at least twenty-one (21) years old at the time of hire.
Certifications and Licenses:
  • State of Florida Teacher Certification.
  • It is the responsibility of the Certified Educator to complete and maintain all necessary certifications within the required timeframe, as set forth by either the licensing agency, State of Florida, or the YMCA of South Florida.
