Key Responsibilities:
  • Engage in the research and innovation of experimental, laser-based spaceflight instruments facilitating in-situ geochronology studies throughout the Solar System.
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary laboratory to design, construct, and enhance cutting-edge spacecraft instruments for scientific endeavors beyond the moon.
  • Participate in the design, development, and hands-on assembly, integration, and testing of instrumentation systems from initial concept to final instrument delivery.
  • Assist senior research and development personnel in pioneering research involving pulsed lasers, mass spectrometry, and high-speed data acquisition technologies.

Daily and Monthly Tasks:
  • Partner with scientific teams to design, construct, and evaluate laser-based instruments capable of in-situ isotopic geochronology.
  • Engage in hands-on activities with Class IIIb/Class IV pulsed and continuous wave lasers, ultra-high vacuum systems, pressurized gases, cryogenic materials, and high-voltage systems.
  • Typical responsibilities will include devising and executing strategies to address a variety of experimental flight hardware challenges, focusing on the design, assembly, and management of mechanical and electrical systems for data acquisition.
  • Collaborate in the design, fabrication, and performance assessment of various optomechanical systems while interfacing with external suppliers to obtain instrumentation hardware, system components, and laboratory testing equipment.
  • Conduct experimental data collection in an optical laboratory setting, develop LabView data acquisition and control systems, and create CAD models for new hardware assemblies.

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Optical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Applied Physics, or a related engineering discipline is required.
  • 1 year of experience for PhD holders: familiarity with optomechanics, lasers, and high vacuum systems, along with academic or professional experience in a laboratory setting.
  • 1-3 years of experience for BS or MS holders: expertise in optomechanics, lasers, and high vacuum systems, with academic or professional laboratory experience.
  • 1 year of demonstrated experience in constructing experimental systems, scientific instruments, or engineering test setups.
  • A valid driver's license is mandatory.

Additional Information:


This position requires compliance with specific regulations. Applicants must be U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, asylees, or refugees) due to regulatory constraints.

Job Locations: Various

Salary Range: $64,000 - $131,061.00
