Job Title: Ophthalmic Technician

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Ophthalmic Technician to join our team at Rapid City Medical Center. As an Ophthalmic Technician, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional patient care and supporting our ophthalmology department.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform data collection functions, including visual acuity testing, manual lensometry, and dilation.
  • Obtain patient history, including chief complaint, history of present illness, and history of allergies and medications.
  • Provide back-up support to the ophthalmic photographer and assist with laser procedures.
  • Assist with minor surgery, maintaining practice standards of sterile technique and infection control.
  • Provide telephone support regarding ocular emergencies, prescription refills, and patient care questions.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma.
  • Valid proof of certification as an ophthalmic assistant or surgical technologist preferred but not required.
  • Valid CPR certification.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated comprehension of ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
  • Basic understanding of optics and ability to perform refractometry.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Empathetic personality with concern for patients' needs.
  • Strong organization with attention to detail.
Work Environment:

Our ophthalmology department is a well-lighted, well-ventilated, and adequately spaced area. You will be exposed to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a clinic setting.

Physical and Mental Demands:

You must be able to use appropriate body mechanics techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing, etc. You must also be able to lift and move equipment up to 30 lbs.
