Job Title: Patient Observer

The Patient Observer plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of high-risk patients in the Emergency Department.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide continuous bedside monitoring and observation for assigned high-risk patients to prevent injury and ensure safety.
  • React quickly to behavioral changes and notify nursing staff of unsafe, changing behaviors or abnormal conditions.
  • Remain with the patient at all times, including during transfers to other units or procedures.
  • Communicate with RNs to understand patient limitations and provide a continuous line of sight with the patient.
  • Verbally intervene to calm or de-escalate patient behavior and prevent conflict.
  • Notify nursing staff in real-time of changing or unusual conditions and behaviors.
  • Maintain a safe environment for the patient area.
  • Perform skills and procedures specific to the role in accordance with departmental competencies and procedures.
  • Document observation notes as required.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and uphold HIPAA requirements.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous patient care experience desired, or one year prior experience in a law/correctional enforcement officer or mental/behavioral health role.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and uphold HIPAA requirements.
  • Physical requirements include standing, walking, and running, with potential occupational exposure to blood or mucous.
  • Ability to take call and arrive at the hospital within one hour or less with short notice.
