Role Overview

In this hands-on role, you will collaborate with engineers, technicians, and product development teams to build prototypes, conduct testing, and travel to client sites for inspections to assist with commissioning activities. The ideal candidate will be results-oriented, self-motivated, data-driven, and adaptable to the evolving demands of our business and clientele.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee a team of engineers and designers to execute project-specific engineering tasks as directed by business development or product management.
  • Manage resource allocation within the Project Engineering team, focusing on risk assessment and mitigation, as well as adherence to project timelines for technical deliverables.
  • Review and authorize engineering change orders (ECOs), drawing packages, bills of materials, and other technical documentation.

Essential Duties

  • Ensure timely completion of engineering change orders, particularly those that generate revenue.
  • Guarantee the successful execution of large-scale projects and custom-engineered solutions.
  • Coordinate with sales and project management teams to allocate resources effectively and manage workloads.
  • Lead technical reviews of specifications for quotations and assess risks associated with large contracts.
  • Facilitate all aspects of custom-engineered solution development, including design, modeling, prototyping, evaluation, and testing.
  • Review design risk assessments and validation activities to ensure compliance with customer specifications and contractual obligations.
  • Ensure adherence to established design and quality practices in line with company policies.
  • Develop design standards for transit systems and components, contributing to the standardization roadmap.
  • Support research and development initiatives by designing experiments and providing insights on test outcomes.
  • Monitor and manage department key performance indicators (KPIs) related to engineering productivity and project completion rates.
  • Review corrective action reports and assist in addressing root causes to resolve issues.
  • Travel as necessary to support engineering teams and perform on-site inspections for large projects.
  • Coordinate engineering activities across all teams in collaboration with the Director of Engineering.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of engineers and designers, conducting interviews, hiring, and training.
  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings to assess performance and provide feedback.
  • Provide leadership and conduct performance evaluations for team members.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies and applicable laws in supervisory practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Nebraska, with the ability to obtain licensure in other states.
  • 3 to 7 years of experience in managing and leading technical teams.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and electrical concepts, with expertise in product design best practices.
  • Proven ability to manage long-term project timelines while maintaining high productivity levels.

Physical and Work Environment

The physical demands of this role require regular sitting, using hands for manipulation, and effective communication. The position may involve occasional walking, reaching, and lifting up to 50 pounds. The work environment is typically quiet, with potential noise exposure during travel requiring hearing protection.
