Position Overview

The ideal candidate will be results-oriented, self-motivated, data-driven, and capable of adapting to the evolving demands of our business and clientele. This role is hands-on. You will collaborate with engineers, technicians, and product development teams, constructing prototypes, conducting tests, and visiting client sites for inspections to assist with commissioning tasks.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline; or equivalent experience.
  • 3-7 years of experience in managing, leading, and mentoring a technical team.
  • Licensed Professional Mechanical Engineer (PE) in Nebraska, with the capability to obtain reciprocity in other states.
  • Experience in the technical review of specifications for bids and large contract risk evaluation.
  • Conducts design risk assessments, verification, and validation activities to ensure that products and solutions meet technical and contractual obligations.
  • Ability to oversee lengthy project timelines while maintaining high productivity to meet project milestones.
  • Experience in drafting design standards.
  • Proficient in 3D modeling software.
  • Familiarity with regulatory codes such as UL, CSA, NEC, and NFPA.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Critical thinking and a process-oriented approach to resolving issues and promoting continuous improvement within the team.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, with an expected travel rate of 10%.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of engineers and designers to fulfill project-specific engineering tasks as directed by business development or product management.
  • Accountable for resource distribution within the Project Engineering team, risk management, and adherence to project deadlines for technical deliverables.
  • Review and authorize Engineering Change Orders (ECOs), drawing packages, bills of materials, and other technical documents.
  • Ensure timely completion of ECOs, focusing on revenue-generating requests.
  • Oversee the completion of large projects and custom-engineered solutions.
  • Coordinate with sales and project management teams to allocate resources effectively.
  • Lead technical reviews of specifications for bids and large contract risk assessments, taking proactive measures to mitigate risks on active projects.
  • Guide all activities related to the development of custom-engineered solutions, including design, modeling, prototyping, evaluation, and testing.
  • Ensure projects adhere to established design and quality standards in line with company policies.
  • Enhance application and product knowledge by developing design standards for transit systems and components.
  • Support research and development initiatives by creating suitable experimental designs and providing feedback on test outcomes.
  • Monitor and manage departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to ECO processing productivity and project task completion rates.
  • Review Corrective Action Reports (CARs) and assist in addressing root causes to resolve issues.
  • Travel to support engineering teams at various facilities as necessary.
  • Conduct on-site inspections for large projects and assist with commissioning activities both nationally and internationally.
  • Coordinate engineering efforts across all teams with the Director of Engineering and other Engineering Managers.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise a team of Engineers and Designers.
  • Conduct interviews, hire, and train new employees. Hold regular one-on-one meetings to assess performance and provide feedback.
  • Provide leadership and conduct performance evaluations for team members.
  • Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of team activities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws.
