The Senior Patient Access Specialist is tasked with executing admission responsibilities for all patients entering the hospital for services. This role demands adherence to the organization's mission and objectives while ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards. The Representative will operate within established policies and procedures throughout the organization.
  • Patient Access personnel are accountable for accurately assigning MRNs, conducting medical necessity and compliance assessments, delivering proper patient instructions, gathering insurance details, processing physician orders, and utilizing an overlay tool while providing exemplary customer service as evaluated by Press Ganey. They will manage the telephone switchboard to facilitate incoming, outgoing, and inter-office communications as required. Adherence to policies and the provision of compassionate customer service during these interactions is essential. Patient Access staff will be held accountable for achieving point of service goals as designated.
  • Senior Patient Access Specialists are responsible for employing quality auditing and reporting systems to ensure account accuracy. This may involve reviewing accounts for other team members, departments, and facilities. They will conduct audits and ensure all documentation is completed accurately and promptly to meet audit standards, providing statistical data to Patient Access leadership.
  • Senior Patient Access Specialists are also responsible for pre-registering patient accounts prior to visits. This may involve both inbound and outbound calls to gather demographic, insurance, and other relevant patient information, including financial liabilities and collection of point of service payments as well as overdue balances and payment plan options.
  • The Senior Patient Access Specialist will explain general consent for treatment forms to patients, guarantors, or legal guardians, obtaining necessary signatures and witness names. They will also explain and distribute patient education materials, such as Important Messages from Medicare, Important Messages from Tricare, Observation Forms, MOON forms, Consent forms, and all documents required for future services.
  • They will review eligibility responses in the insurance verification system, accurately selecting the applicable insurance plan code and entering benefit data into the system to support Point of Service Collections and billing processes, thereby assisting with clean claim rates.
  • Responsible for the precise screening of medical necessity using the Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) software, they will inform Medicare patients of potential non-payment for tests by Medicare and distribute the ABN as appropriate. They will also be responsible for the distribution and documentation of other designated forms and pamphlets.
Employment Qualifications:
  • 1 - 3 years of relevant experience
Other Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • 2 Year/ Associates Degree
  • Preferred Minimum Education - Specialty/Major: Healthcare administration, business administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum Years and Type of Experience: 2-3 years in patient access or a leadership role.
  • Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Understanding of Revenue Cycle including admission, billing, payments, and denials. Comprehensive knowledge of patient insurance processes for obtaining authorizations and benefits verification. Familiarity with Health Insurance requirements. Knowledge of medical terminology or CPT or procedure codes.
