The New England College of Optometry (NECO) is seeking candidates for the role of Junior Accounting Specialist. Reporting directly to the Assistant Controller, this integral position will collaborate with the Business Office team to ensure that the College's revenues and expenditures, along with those of its affiliate, the NECO Center for Eye Care, are accurately recorded in accordance with GAAP and institutional policies.

As a leading institution in optometric education, NECO is dedicated to preparing future eye care professionals through a comprehensive curriculum and extensive clinical training. The College serves a diverse student body of approximately 530 individuals from various states and countries.

The NECO Center for Eye Care functions as the clinical education and patient care branch of the College, providing a wide range of optometric services across Massachusetts, with nearly 90,000 patient visits annually at numerous locations.

This full-time role will primarily focus on cash receipts and general accounting functions. The Junior Accounting Specialist will uphold the integrity of financial data by recording, verifying, consolidating, and entering transactions. Close collaboration with the Assistant Controller, the Executive Director of Financial Operations, and other Business Office personnel will be essential in managing daily, monthly, and annual financial operations, as well as assisting in the financial closing processes.

Key Responsibilities:

Cash Receipts Management

  • Process and deposit incoming payments from students, donors, grantors, and other sources.
  • Maintain effective communication with various departments to inform them of received payments and clarify the source and proper accounting for any unexpected funds.
  • Review daily banking activities to ensure all transactions are appropriate and accurately recorded in the general ledger.

General Accounting Duties

  • Prepare, review, and record entries, invoices, and receivables on both general and subsidiary ledgers.
  • Set up new vendors within the ERP system.
  • Research and document cash receipts, including tuition payments, donations, and miscellaneous income.
  • Reconcile various general ledger accounts on a monthly basis.

Salary Range: $60,000 - $65,000

Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's Degree required, with a minimum of one year of post-degree professional experience in general accounting.
  2. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  3. Experience in higher education accounting is preferred.
  4. Familiarity with computerized ledger systems.
