Nature of Work

This role involves comprehensive structural engineering analysis and review of construction projects in accordance with local building codes. The position entails advanced inspections, enforcement, and supervisory responsibilities in evaluating, analyzing, and approving plans to ensure adherence to relevant building regulations.

The incumbent will engage in detailed evaluations, applying expert technical knowledge and judgment in assessing plans, blueprints, calculations, and other specifications for compliance with established standards. This position primarily operates in an office environment, reviewing various construction documents and interacting with the public, while also conducting field inspections to verify compliance with approved designs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts thorough reviews of structural and building plans, including load analysis and material specifications.
  • Evaluates roofing permits and associated engineering documentation.
  • Determines the compliance of plans and specifications with applicable building codes and construction practices.
  • Suggests methods and materials to ensure adherence to accepted standards.
  • Oversees the City’s Board Up program, coordinating with contractors and inspecting buildings that are damaged or deemed unsafe.
  • Issues requests for the vacation or demolition of structures identified as hazardous.
  • Provides interpretation of regulations and technical guidance to various stakeholders.
  • Conducts emergency inspections and enforces regulations related to structural integrity.
  • Addresses and resolves public complaints.
  • Prepares documentation and reports regarding inspection activities.
  • Assigns tasks to team members and leads staff meetings.
  • Participates in the implementation of departmental policies and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Performs additional duties as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Certification as a Structural Plans Examiner as per local regulations.
  • Must hold a valid Florida Professional Engineer license with a specialization in structural engineering.
  • A minimum of five years of experience as a Structural Engineer within the relevant jurisdiction.
  • License must be in good standing with no pending complaints.
  • Successful candidates will undergo a thorough background check.
Physical Requirements
  • Primarily office-based work with some outdoor inspections required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and the public.
  • Physical capability to operate office equipment and perform site inspections.
  • Must be able to navigate construction sites safely.
