We are currently looking for a Campus Safety Officer dedicated to upholding the institution's esteemed legacy of excellence in education, student engagement, and community involvement.

The Role

Your objective: We will rely on you to maintain the security of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors, allowing us to continue providing the education and training necessary for our graduates to achieve their career aspirations.

A typical day: Your morning may involve patrolling campus facilities and parking areas, investigating any unusual situations or individuals, and ensuring doors and windows are secure. You may respond to calls or complaints, assessing, resolving, and documenting the incidents. During peak times, you might spend time directing traffic in busy parking areas.

In the afternoon, you could deliver a presentation on crime prevention to students, faculty, and staff. On your way back, you might witness a medical emergency and assist emergency personnel as needed. Additionally, you may need to attend court to provide testimony related to campus incidents.

SUMMARY

Ensure the safety of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors while providing security for all campus facilities and property. Respond to and manage emergency situations as necessary.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Conduct patrols of assigned areas by foot, bicycle, or vehicle to enforce laws and investigate suspicious activities;
  2. Engage in foot pursuits of fleeing individuals through various terrains or buildings at any time of day;
  3. Subdue individuals who resist or pose a threat using appropriate techniques and tools;
  4. Apply restraints when necessary, often under challenging conditions;
  5. Safely operate a vehicle under all traffic and weather conditions, occasionally exceeding speed limits when justified;
  6. Apprehend individuals following extended pursuits or physical altercations;
  7. Approach individuals engaged in illegal activities and, if necessary, detain them to maintain order;
  8. Physically assist individuals from vehicles or buildings when required;
  9. Quickly enter and exit vehicles to perform emergency operations;
  10. Assess the appropriate level of force needed to apprehend individuals;
  11. Utilize standard equipment to enforce laws and protect lives in critical situations;
  12. Provide assistance to individuals in distress due to accidents or crimes;
  13. Conduct thorough searches of various environments to locate potential hazards or evidence;
  14. Investigate traffic incidents to determine causes and ensure safety;
  15. Direct traffic during emergencies or adverse conditions to safeguard public safety;
  16. Enforce traffic regulations by issuing citations or warnings;
  17. Provide accurate testimony and protect the rights and property of others;
  18. Gather evidence and document facts during criminal investigations;
  19. Communicate effectively using various methods to provide assistance and build community relations;
  20. Manage interpersonal conflicts and provide aid or information as needed;
  21. Confront hazardous situations with a calm and rational approach;
  22. Monitor and report safety hazards and security deficiencies;
  23. Protect against theft of institutional property;
  24. Assist medical personnel when necessary;
  25. Transport and process arrested individuals;
  26. Conduct crime prevention assessments on campus;
  27. Facilitate crime prevention initiatives for the campus community;
  28. Collaborate with administration to resolve conflicts among students and staff;
  29. Conduct preliminary investigations and submit detailed reports; and
  30. Investigate accidents and injuries, providing comprehensive reports.
QUALIFICATIONS

The qualifications listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required.

To successfully perform this role, an individual must be capable of executing the essential duties and responsibilities outlined above. Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation and demonstrate integrity suitable for this position.

EDUCATION

A minimum of a high school diploma or GED is required, with an Associate's Degree preferred.

Completion of the TCLEOSE Peace Officer Licensing Exam (minimum score of 70%) or possession of a valid TCOLE Peace Officer license is necessary.

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of three years of law enforcement experience with honorable separations from previous agencies is required. Alternatively, candidates may qualify with twelve (12) college credit hours from an accredited institution or an honorable military discharge.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to lift and move 150 lbs. without assistance;
  • Ability to enter and exit vehicles quickly and without assistance;
  • Ability to run 100 yards without stopping and remain functional afterward;
  • Ability to perform all essential duties independently.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  1. Employees in this role will work rotating shifts in a 24/7 environment, including holidays, nights, and weekends;
  2. Effective verbal and written communication skills with a diverse population;
  3. Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws;
  4. Able to mediate conflicts and demonstrate professionalism in high-stress situations;
  5. Maintain composure and rational decision-making in potentially dangerous environments;
  6. Exhibit self-control when faced with hostility or provocation.
