We are seeking a highly skilled Plant Utilities Engineer 1 to join our team at Stony Brook University. As a key member of our facilities maintenance team, you will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical equipment to provide heat, hot water, ventilation, air-conditioning, and electrical distribution in the most efficient and safe manner possible.
Key Responsibilities- Operate and maintain steam and hot water boilers, including lighting off, firing, cleaning, and shutting down systems.
- Operate chillers and related equipment, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
- Read and interpret technical manuals, specifications, design drawings, and wiring diagrams to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
- Work with OSHA, PESH, EPA, DEC Health, New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Codes, and Labor rules and regulations to ensure compliance and safety.
- Clean, inspect, maintain, and repair boilers, including flushing, tubing, and chemical cleaning of water and fire sides.
- Perform chiller maintenance, including cleaning condenser tubes, evaporators, and maintenance of steam turbines, pumps, air compressors, steam systems, cooling towers, motors, motor starters, and variable frequency drives.
- Handle hazardous materials, including refrigerants, Freon, gas, fuel oil, solvents, antifreeze, biocides, bitrates, amines, cyclohexylamine, marpholine, diethylamino ethanol, acids, caustic soda, regulated waste, and refuse.
- Respond to incidents with potential environmental impact and/or safety concerns, including chemical spills, oil spills, and blowouts, and implement evacuation plans in emergency situations.
- Work in confined spaces using personal protective equipment and supervise others working in confined spaces.
- Work at high elevations up to 40 feet off the floor or ground level, using ladders for emergency exits.
- Tolerate high noise levels, with hearing protection required at all times when working in the Power Plant.
- Repair and maintain high and low voltage distribution equipment, including motor controls and emergency power distribution systems.
- Keep written records of maintenance performed, fuel consumption, and meter readings, and prepare reports on equipment malfunctions.
- Provide training and assistance to subordinates.
- Graduate of a heating, HVAC, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration apprenticeship program from the U.S. Air Force, or equivalent experience.
- Enlisted machinery technician (MK) with the U.S. Coast Guard, or possession of a certificate as a Marine Engineer issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
- Enlisted power generation equipment repairer with the U.S. Army, or equivalent experience.
- Enlisted gas turbine systems technician, submarine nuclear propulsion plant operator reactor control, utilities man, machinist mate, or engineman with the U.S. Navy, or equivalent experience.
- Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) and qualified member of the engine department (QMED) as an oiler, fireman/water tender, refrigerating engineer, or engineman with the U.S. Merchant Marine, or equivalent experience.
- Completion of a New York State Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program for stationary engineers, plant maintenance (plumber/steamfitter), HVAC Mechanic, or plant maintenance (refrigeration/AC), or equivalent experience.
- Possession of a High-Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer License or Stationary Engineer License, or equivalent experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Facilities Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Marine Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- Four years of full-time hands-on experience in the maintenance and operation of commercial, industrial, institutional facility, computer applications of digital energy platforms and building analytics, and/or performing diagnosis, repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment.
- Four years of full-time hands-on experience in a residential setting performing diagnosis, operation, maintenance, repair of HVAC systems or boilers or auxiliary equipment.
- Associate's degree in HVAC and two years of qualifying experience as described in EITHER qualification #9 or #10 above.
- Completion of an HVAC certificate or diploma from a BOCES program (900 hours) or completion of an approved certificate in HVAC, electrical, refrigeration, boiler operations and maintenance, or plumbing from an accredited technical school or technology college and two years of qualifying experience as described in EITHER qualification #9 or #10 above.
- Associate's Degree in Plant Utilities Technology or the equivalent.
