Position Overview

The Department of Food & Agriculture is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Environmental Research Specialist to oversee a diverse range of scientific and professional tasks in both office and field settings. This role involves extensive research, environmental assessment, outreach, and logistical support for agricultural initiatives, particularly focusing on pest control programs.

Key Responsibilities

As a Lead Environmental Research Specialist, your responsibilities will include:

  • Designing and executing pest detection, eradication, and management strategies for invasive agricultural and ecological pests affecting California.
  • Collecting and analyzing descriptive and spatial data from laboratory and field research, and utilizing this information to create comprehensive scientific reports and presentations.
  • Assessing the effectiveness and environmental consequences of pest management initiatives to ensure alignment with program goals.
  • Preparing and submitting environmental permit applications, regulatory documentation, and other necessary paperwork for state, county, and local authorities.
  • Employing scientific methodologies to identify, investigate, and resolve issues related to pest management, environmental monitoring, pollution prevention, and natural resource conservation.
  • Reviewing and interpreting data gathered from research and implementation efforts.
  • Conducting inspections of pest control operations to ensure biological integrity and compliance with contractual obligations.
  • Formulating regulatory guidelines for state, county, and local entities, and enforcing environmental standards and health regulations.
  • Traveling to various sites to plan and implement pest detection and management activities.
  • Gathering and synthesizing information from research initiatives to develop outreach materials and educational brochures.
  • Participating in legal proceedings and field assessments as a resource for environmental issues.
  • Editing and organizing scientific publications for dissemination.
  • Consulting with stakeholders to provide regulatory guidance and ensure compliance with existing laws and regulations.

Work Environment

This position entails a balanced workload, with approximately 50% of duties performed in standard office settings equipped with necessary technology and equipment. The remaining 50% involves fieldwork in various environments across California, requiring travel to remote or populated areas.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's or advanced degree in biological, chemical, physical, or environmental sciences, or a closely related field. A valid California Driver's License and a clean driving record are also required.

Additional Information

This role may involve occasional telework as per departmental policies. The successful candidate will be expected to adapt to varying work conditions and schedules, including potential emergency projects.
