Job Title: Youth Services Peer Navigator

Safe Horizon is seeking a compassionate and dynamic Youth Services Peer Navigator to join our team. As a key member of our Streetwork Project, you will play a vital role in promoting access to harm reduction supplies and services for homeless youth in Harlem.

Job Summary

The Youth Services Peer Navigator will work closely with our team to provide comprehensive services to adolescents and young adults impacted by homelessness and involved in street activities. You will facilitate and conduct one-on-one harm reduction goal setting interventions, provide overdose prevention and response trainings, and connect clients to supportive resources.

Responsibilities
  • Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach into your work with clients.
  • Engage adolescents into program structure and facilitate access to daily living needs.
  • Conduct intake and assessment, screen for substance use risk, and facilitate educational presentations on drug user health and well-being issues.
  • Provide syringe exchange, opioid overdose reversal medication, and overdose prevention education.
  • Help orient and train client harm reduction peers to conduct outreach and pack harm reduction supplies.
  • Convene and facilitate a quarterly client peer advisory group.
  • Conduct harm reduction outreach and coordinate services with other Streetwork staff and on-site legal, medical, sexual health, and psychiatric service providers.
Requirements
  • Compassionate approach to others and openness to new ideas.
  • Dynamic energy, able to multi-task and negotiate multiple demands on attention.
  • Non-judgmental approach and ability to empathize with others.
  • Clear and concise verbal and written communication skill, excellent interpersonal and organization skills.
  • Genuine interest in working with disenfranchised youth and young adults.
  • Understanding of and ability to work from a harm reduction perspective addressing substance use, mental health issues, and HIV risk behaviors.
  • One year experience working with homeless populations, youth, or harm reduction, and lived experience similar to the target population.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalency plus relevant training and experience in human services or a related field.
  • Personal experience with street survival activities and a deep understanding of the relationship between personal experiences and professional standards.
