Job Summary

The University of Maryland Medical System is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our multidisciplinary patient care services team, you will provide and coordinate independent care to patients within a clinical specialty.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide independent care to unit-specific patient populations, serving as a clinical resource for others and utilizing evidence-based practice.
  • Accountable to patients and families for the processes and outcomes of care during an episode of care.
  • Accountable to peers for the advancement of group practice on the unit and to the nurse manager for the totality of work performance.
  • Serve as an effective primary coordinating nurse, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate care addressing patient/family needs.
Service/Quality
  • Assist in team development and evaluation of tenants of Patient and Family Centered Care, suggesting methods for improvement.
  • Participate in the collection of data related to outcomes, such as hand-offs and medication safety.
  • Participate in implementation efforts addressing Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI).
  • Contribute to Performance Improvement, Evidence-Based Practice, or research at the unit level.
Unit Operations
  • Support charge nurse decisions and perform charge role for assigned shifts as needed.
  • Assist in the development of clinical practice protocols and standards for the unit.
  • Participate in unit-based process activities, such as Performance Improvement, Professional Development, Clinical Practice, and Teamwork.
  • Orient Clinical Nurse I to unit-level decision-making structure and councils.
Professional Development
  • Serve as a preceptor, coach, and mentor to new nurses and students.
  • Contribute to the development of ancillary personnel skills and attend educational offerings and in-services independently.
Qualifications
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland or eligibility to practice due to Compact state agreements.
  • Up-to-date status on all mandatory training and classes.
  • One year of nursing experience with solid knowledge and clinical skills.
  • Diploma in nursing or Associate's Degree in nursing required.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • Unit-based licensure as required for the role, as defined at the unit/department level.
  • Maintenance of 10 contact hours of education every two years.
  • Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting.

  • Maintain competencies required for the patient care setting and focus on advancing own professional development.
  • Ability to practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the Role of the Professional Nurse Job Charter/Description and Commitment to Excellence Behavioral Standards.
  • Demonstrate highly effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate leadership qualities through effectiveness as a charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource.
  • Demonstrate effectiveness as a multidisciplinary team member.
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems to manage patient information.
  • Ability to participate in team-building efforts on units and support and model teamwork.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served.
Patient Safety
  • Ensure patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department, or unit patient safety initiatives.
  • Take action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Report adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
  • Implement policies, procedures, and standards consistently in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Develop effective working relationships and maintain good communication with other team members.
  • Identify possible risks in processes, procedures, devices, and communicate the same to those in charge.
