Laboratory Operations Manager

Stanford CA, United States Stanford University Full time

We are in search of a dedicated and detail-oriented individual to take on the role of Laboratory Operations Manager and Research Associate in the field of Genomics and Cardiac Health.

This position involves providing support to three interconnected laboratories focused on advancing research in pediatric heart conditions. The candidate will play a crucial role in the Stanford Children's Heart Center Basic Science and Engineering Initiative, collaborating closely with the Department of Genetics.

Laboratory Overview:
Our mission is to harness the latest advancements in genetics and genomics to address and potentially cure heart diseases in children.

We specifically investigate DNA regulatory elements within the human genome, which contain numerous genetic risk variants associated with both common and rare heart diseases. Our goal is to identify therapeutic targets that can precisely modulate cellular functions by mapping the intricate regulatory connections between millions of regulatory elements and thousands of genes across various cell types.

Recent innovations have enabled us to map this regulatory network on a large scale, and we have applied these methods to uncover the genetic underpinnings of congenital heart defects.

Our research has led to the identification of enhancers linked to disease variants that influence the risk of congenital heart defects, and we aim to explore the functional roles of these enhancers using mouse models and human cardiac organoids.

These investigations will ultimately shed light on the biological mechanisms underlying congenital heart defects and inform diagnosis and treatment strategies for affected children.

We are looking for an innovative and enthusiastic individual at any career stage to manage our combined experimental and computational laboratory.

The laboratories are situated in close proximity, fostering a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment that offers unique access to cutting-edge technologies and scientific insights, with the potential for significant recognition of scientific contributions.

We value diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and approaches to problem-solving.

The ideal candidate should possess hands-on experience in molecular biology, genomics, and the development of cellular assays; experience in team building or management; adaptability to effectively navigate changes in a fast-paced environment; and a strong passion for science with a sense of urgency to discover new treatments for patients.

Candidates with varying levels of laboratory management experience are encouraged to apply, as on-the-job training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct fundamental research on gene regulation and the genetics of cardiovascular diseases.
  • Collaborate with principal investigators to oversee laboratory management, including protocols, procedures, inventory, and training.
  • Mentor and supervise laboratory members in experimental techniques, scientific design, and safety protocols.
  • Coordinate ordering supplies for all lab members and maintain a comprehensive database for managing these orders.
  • Assist with budgeting and financial oversight, including compiling and reporting purchasing data while optimizing inventory and costs.
  • Develop organizational tools to enhance laboratory productivity.
  • Maintain and update laboratory protocols and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
  • Oversee the maintenance and servicing of laboratory equipment, including cold storage units.
  • Maintain an accurate chemical inventory.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field with two years of related work experience; or a Master's degree in a related scientific field.
  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
  • Proficiency in computer skills and the ability to quickly learn and master scientific applications.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks that may include lifting and carrying objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Willingness to work in environments where animals are used for research and teaching.
  • Ability to comply with safety protocols and regulations.

We are committed to providing reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities to perform essential job functions.

We expect all employees to adhere to applicable University policies and procedures.
