Job Summary:

The Library Media Specialist will play a critical role in supporting the educational mission of the Mobile County Public School System. This position will be responsible for collaborating with teachers to plan and implement instruction, establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior, and ensuring the Library Media Center is organized to accommodate a variety of uses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaboration and Instruction: Collaborate with teachers to plan and implement instruction that meets the diverse needs of students, including those with special needs.
  • Student Behavior and Discipline: Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to achieve a positive learning atmosphere, and develop and implement strategies to promote student responsibility and respect for others.
  • Library Media Center Operations: Ensure the Library Media Center is organized to accommodate a variety of uses, including research, instruction, and recreational activities.
  • Reading Initiatives and Special Activities: Collaborate with teachers and administrators to develop and implement reading initiatives and special activities that promote literacy and a love of reading.
  • Technology Integration: Implement the use of technology in program management and instruction, including the development and maintenance of online resources and digital collections.
  • Collection Development and Maintenance: Maintain a balanced collection and an up-to-date and accurate automated catalog, and develop and implement strategies to promote the use of library resources.
  • Communication and Community Engagement: Communicate regularly with all stakeholders using a variety of formats, including email, phone, and in-person meetings.
  • Professional Development and Support: Provide professional development and technology support for teachers and administrators, including training and technical assistance.
  • Budgeting and Financial Management: Establish budget priorities based on a needs assessment and input from the Library Media Advisory Committee, and manage the library budget to ensure effective use of resources.
  • Reporting and Evaluation: Maintain library usage records and submit required reports, and evaluate the library media program and student progress, making adjustments to maintain positive results.
  • Policies and Procedures: Develop a Policies and Procedures manual based on State and District handbooks and approved by the District Library Media Supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Library Science or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in a library media setting.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations and promote inclusivity.
  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency in library software and technology.
