Position Summary

We are seeking a Bioassay Scientist to deliver scientific and technical support for the Marshall Islands Program. This initiative focuses on understanding the long-term effects of fallout radionuclides in coral atoll ecosystems, evaluating human exposure levels, and developing training programs to enhance radiological safety and awareness.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of the Whole Body Counting (WBC) and Indirect Radio-Bioassay Programs.
  • Conduct thorough quality assurance assessments of WBC spectra and maintain accurate personnel databases.
  • Ensure compliance with Institutional Review Board (IRB) protocols for the WBC program.
  • Develop and manage database listings, validate dose calculations, and coordinate the distribution of Individual Dose Reports (IDRs).
  • Provide mentorship and training to local technicians and students, creating procedural documents in both English and Marshallese.
  • Support the maintenance and operation of radiometric counting systems, ensuring adherence to quality assurance standards.
  • Collaborate with scientists and IT personnel to enhance procedures and communication tools for the WBC and Indirect Radio-Bioassay Programs.
  • Contribute to scientific reports, publications, and online content.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, chemistry, physics, or biology, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience with APEX and/or ABACOS 2000 Whole Body Counting software.
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English and Marshallese.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Basic understanding of health physics and the environmental behavior of cesium-137.
  • Familiarity with database management and structures.
