Position Summary

This managerial role within the Tax Division focuses on technical aspects of tax accounting and compliance. The selected candidate will oversee the preparation and evaluation of federal income tax compliance and local tax submissions for non-insurance entities, supervise all outsourced state compliance, and manage related audits. This position will also act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in partnership taxation, supporting GAAP tax accounting for quarterly and annual reporting of non-insurance entities in accordance with applicable accounting standards. Additionally, the role will contribute significantly to Finance Modernization initiatives by enhancing automation and modernizing tax processes.

The Tax Compliance Manager will function as an individual contributor and report directly to the Director of Tax Accounting and Compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct quarterly and annual current tax provisions for non-insurance entities for GAAP reporting.
  • Oversee the preparation and review of federal income tax returns and estimates for non-insurance entities.
  • Integrate the owned Independent Marketing Organization (IMO) investments into the tax compliance and reporting of non-insurance entities.
  • Manage partnership tax compliance associated with the company's IMO investments and related entities.
  • Collaborate with management and business partners to develop future tax processes and procedures concerning IMO investments.
  • Reevaluate state tax filing profiles for non-life companies due to IMO investments.
  • Supervise all facets of tax compliance for non-insurance entities, including state income, franchise, property, and sales & use taxes.
  • Oversee the outsourcing process with accounting firms for state income tax compliance.
  • Implement internal controls and assist in maintaining evidence of controls.
  • Communicate with auditors and provide necessary information as required.
  • Review check requests and wire payments for federal and state obligations.
  • Conduct tax research and provide recommendations based on findings.
  • Manage inquiries and audits from federal, state, and local taxing authorities.
  • Negotiate and resolve state and local audits.
  • Handle SALT (State and Local Tax) components of business plans and updates.
  • Identify and implement automation and modernization of tax processes to enhance efficiency and reduce compliance and reporting cycle times.
  • Lead additional tax projects and analyze new transactions as necessary.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field; a Master's degree in accounting or taxation is preferred.
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in a corporate tax environment or public accounting firm is required.
  • 5+ years of experience in the insurance industry and/or financial services is preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is preferred.
  • Experience in a regulated environment is essential.

Skills and Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of tax accounting principles, including ASC740.
  • Familiarity with tax software systems, including web-based compliance and research tools.
  • Strong financial analysis and diagnostic skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented setting.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly advanced skills in Microsoft Excel.
