Position Overview:
This role is designed for the academic year.
Key Responsibilities:
• Exhibit professional leadership and effective communication within the Campus Special Education department and with external stakeholders.
• Serve as the primary contact for coordinating Special Education services on campus.
• Support all educators assigned to the campus in fulfilling their teaching responsibilities and related tasks for students receiving Special Education services.
Qualifications:
Education and Certification:
• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is required.
• A Master's degree in Education from an accredited institution is preferred.
• A valid Texas Teacher Certification in Special Education is mandatory.
• A valid Texas Teacher Certification in one of the following areas is required:
Elementary or Middle School Generalist OR
Core Subjects EC-6 OR Core Subjects 4–8 OR
Another valid Texas teaching certificate suitable for grades K-8.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
• Awareness of contemporary trends in special education.
• Experience in the coordination and development of activities within the Special Education Department.
• Familiarity with resources available both within and outside the educational institution.
• Proficient in facilitating Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings.
• In-depth understanding of the unique needs of students in the designated area.
• Comprehensive knowledge of the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process, as well as IEP goal setting and implementation.
• Proficient in adapting curriculum and instructional methods for students with special needs.
• Strong communication skills.
Experience:
• A minimum of five years of teaching experience in Special Education.
• Leadership experience, such as serving as a Department Head, is preferred.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Instructional Strategies:
1. Collaborate with students, parents, and staff to create IEPs through the ARD Committee process for each assigned student.
2. Implement instructional, therapeutic, or skill development programs for assigned students, providing written evidence of preparation as required.
3. Assess student learning styles and plan appropriate instructional strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the needs of assigned students.
4. Present subject matter effectively in accordance with IEP guidelines, utilizing various instructional techniques and media, including technology, to meet the diverse needs of each student.
5. Work collaboratively with classroom teachers to modify standard curricula as necessary and assist special education students in mainstream classes with their assignments.
6. Regularly participate in ARD Committee meetings.
7. Engage in the selection of instructional materials, equipment, and resources.
Student Growth and Development:
8. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through both formal and informal testing methods.
9. Provide or oversee personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as outlined in their IEPs.
10. Take responsibility for assigned extracurricular activities and sponsor approved outside activities.
11. Consult with district and external resources regarding the educational, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
Classroom Management and Organization:
12. Create a classroom environment that fosters learning and supports the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
13. Manage student behavior and implement disciplinary measures, including intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students when necessary, in accordance with IEP guidelines.
14. Collaborate with classroom teachers on managing student behavior as per IEP requirements.
15. Take all necessary precautions to safeguard students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
16. Plan and assign tasks to teacher aides and volunteers, overseeing their completion.
Additional Responsibilities:
17. Maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
18. Foster professional relationships with parents, students, and colleagues.
19. Participate in professional development activities to enhance job-related skills.
20. Stay informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies regarding special education.
21. Compile, maintain, and file all required physical and electronic reports, records, and documents.
22. Attend and contribute to faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as necessary.
Other Duties: 23. Perform any additional duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
