Clinical Agreements Negotiation Specialist

Position Overview:
The role entails supporting the examination and negotiation of a substantial volume of clinical study agreements and associated documents on behalf of Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). This position requires collaboration with international partners, faculty, staff, and legal counsel throughout the contracting process. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects within tight deadlines are essential.
Telework Eligibility: The individual in this role may qualify for up to three days of remote work in accordance with EVMS policy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain an organized spreadsheet for clinical contracts involving industry sponsorship, federal, state, corporate, and private foundations, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations while meeting EVMS policies and procedures.
- Provide independent recommendations regarding alternative contract language.
- Prepare amendments for contracts and budget documents as required.
- Offer administrative support, essential education, and communication, acting as a liaison between Grants Accounting and Sponsored Programs.
- Foster effective working relationships with physicians, department administrators, senior leaders, clinical operations, and other internal and external stakeholders involved in the contracting process.
- Assist in resolving contract-related issues by liaising with Legal, Risk Management, clinical teams, and other internal parties.
- Communicate institutional policies and procedures to research support staff and Principal Investigators.
- Manage the creation, issuance, and routing of subcontracts, modifications, confidentiality agreements, and assist with clinical trial agreements as necessary.
- Serve as a backup for all Sponsored Programs staff.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree is required, along with two (2) years of relevant experience. Experience in a sponsored research or industry setting is preferred. Additional education may substitute for required experience, and related experience may substitute for required education. Candidates must possess the ability to comprehend contract terms, redline agreements, and make informed decisions with a practical, business-oriented approach to contract negotiation. Previous experience in project management or coordinating large projects is advantageous.
Essential Job Competencies:
- Ability to review and understand technical, medical, and legal documents pertinent to Clinical Trial Agreements.
- Skills in negotiating, planning, strategizing, mentoring, monitoring, scheduling, analysis, and problem-solving.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including negotiation expertise and knowledge of Clinical Trial Agreements.
- Sound judgment to protect EVMS's interests while meeting strategic contracting objectives and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Proficient in computer and internet skills, including knowledge of MS Office applications such as Excel, Word, and Outlook.
