The Chief Advancement Officer will be responsible for crafting and executing a dynamic and comprehensive advancement strategy that aligns with the university's philanthropic goals. This leader will champion the university's mission and uphold its reputation as a global leader in education and research by fostering a cohesive vision for advancement that builds on the successes of previous campaigns and enhances the university's objectives across all units and campuses worldwide. The Chief Advancement Officer will be a relationship-focused leader, skilled in interpersonal communication, with a strong commitment to engaging a diverse array of stakeholders, particularly alumni and parents.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead CMU's comprehensive advancement initiatives, including fundraising, alumni and parent engagement, business partnerships, and university events by:

  • Developing and executing a strategic advancement plan that is innovative and inclusive, addressing various philanthropic revenue streams both domestically and internationally, while supporting the university's mission and objectives;
  • Creating and implementing top-tier alumni engagement programs that leverage the university's resources to provide value to over 130,000 geographically diverse alumni;
  • Enhancing the university's capacity for international fundraising by establishing necessary infrastructure and staffing.
Collaborate with CMU's academic and administrative leadership to cultivate philanthropic support that propels CMU's growth by:
  • Partnering with academic and administrative leaders to develop a cohesive and energetic advancement strategy that capitalizes on CMU's strengths;
  • Supporting academic and administrative leaders in their fundraising roles, ensuring they are actively involved in advancement activities;
  • Encouraging faculty and senior leaders to take ownership of the university's advancement efforts.
Promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community and leverage the momentum of previous campaigns to prepare for future initiatives by:
  • Engaging prospects, donors, parents, alumni, and other stakeholders to build excitement for upcoming campaigns;
  • Working closely with the President and board to strategize and execute new campaigns aligned with the university's priorities;
  • Assessing the success of past campaigns and identifying strategies to enhance future campaign effectiveness.
Oversee the Division of University Advancement, fostering a culture of excellence and commitment to access and opportunity by:
  • Setting clear goals and metrics for success, promoting a culture of achievement that values collaboration and innovation;
  • Embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values within the division and continuously assessing progress towards an inclusive culture;
  • Leading by example to create an environment of transparency, respect, and cooperation.
Act as a trusted advisor to the President and senior leadership by:
  • Providing strategic guidance and fostering relationships with donors and stakeholders;
  • Collaborating with leadership to navigate complex challenges and position the university for success;
  • Keeping leadership informed of emerging best practices and opportunities in the advancement field.
Manage a portfolio of CMU's top supporters, including trustees and corporate partners by:
  • Identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding key prospects for transformational gifts;
  • Expanding the network of top supporters, with a focus on international prospects;
  • Leading by example as a successful fundraiser who inspires collaboration.
Enhance programs designed to engage CMU's diverse constituencies, particularly alumni and parents by:
  • Recognizing the vital role of alumni and donor relationships in advancing the university's mission;
  • Building strong, productive relationships with alumni and employing various engagement strategies;
  • Ensuring alumni engagement is recognized as a valuable partnership with university leadership.
Support the identification and recruitment of exceptional volunteers by:
  • Working effectively with the current board and identifying future board members;
  • Ensuring continuity and diversity in the volunteer pipeline;
  • Reviewing and enhancing volunteer engagement strategies to create positive experiences for both volunteers and the university.
