The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is dedicated to the preservation, management, and advocacy of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Position Overview
The Field Coordinator acts as a vital support resource for on-site trail and conservation initiatives along the Appalachian Trail. This role primarily involves fieldwork alongside ATC personnel and trail club volunteers, supplemented by certain administrative responsibilities. The Field Coordinator represents the organization within the state, collaborates closely with local volunteer management clubs, and engages with other Trail partners to ensure compliance with ATC and NPS standards while providing logistical support and specialized knowledge as needed.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist volunteers and trail crews in the planning and execution of trail work projects, including construction, repair, rehabilitation, and relocations.
  • Evaluate federally funded projects conducted by local partners.
  • Offer guidance to ensure maintenance standards are upheld.
  • Document and maintain before-and-after records for each project site.
  • Support efforts for hazard tree removal.
  • Monitor and maintain the A.T. exterior corridor boundary, mitigate encroachments, and coordinate volunteer activities.
  • Conduct trail asset inventories and collect GPS data for future projects.
  • Support essential ATC and NPS programs.
  • Assist regional staff with program and project planning, development, and reporting.
  • Participate in local and regional partner meetings as required.
  • Ensure timely and accurate project documentation, timesheets, and expense reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Regional Manager.
Qualifications
  • Educational background or coursework in environmental studies, recreation management, natural resources management, forestry, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience leading trail crews, particularly with rock work and advanced trail reconstruction techniques.
  • Prior trail work experience in the Northeast is advantageous.
  • Ability to hike up to ten miles daily in steep, mountainous terrain.
  • Commitment to the management and resource protection initiatives of the ATC.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Effective communication skills with individuals, groups, and partners.
  • Capacity to live independently and operate in remote areas with limited oversight.
  • Strong background in hiking and outdoor activities.
  • Experience collaborating with volunteers of diverse ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.
  • Basic understanding of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's cooperative management system is preferred.
  • Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions.
  • Leave No Trace Trainer or Master Educator certification is desirable; awareness training will be provided.
  • Current Wilderness First-Aid or higher, and CPR certification is preferred; training will be provided.
  • Willingness to engage in additional required training, including but not limited to: USFS chainsaw & crosscut saw certification, WFR/WFA, advanced rockwork, rigging, and safe driving.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Potential exposure to hazardous physical conditions and seasonal extreme weather, including rain, snow, humidity, intense heat, and sunlight.
  • Must be capable of hiking for extended periods and performing moderate lifting, carrying up to 50 pounds in a backpack over a minimum of five miles through rough, uneven terrain.
  • Long field days and weekend work are typical, generally amounting to 40 hours per week.
  • Possible exposure to ticks and pests, extreme weather, and hazards typical of backcountry environments.
  • Regular computer use is required; familiarity with Microsoft Office, Office 365, ESRI GIS, NPS database, APD, NetSuite, RIMS, and Google applications is necessary.
  • A valid driver's license and access to a reliable personal vehicle are required.
Additional Information
  • Term Length: Approximately May to October.
  • Hourly Rate: $20.00.
  • Remote work location required.
  • Benefits: 1 hour of sick time accrued per 30 hours worked.
