Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Space Manager to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing and coordinating the use of space within our facilities portfolio.

Key Responsibilities
  • Project Management
    • Represent the interests of the Commonwealth of Virginia in supporting the facilities needs of our departments and programs.
    • Represent the Commonwealth in transactions with external partners, including contractors and consultants.
    • Arrange and manage relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support our facilities needs.
    • Review project proposals and budgets, and recommend direction in conjunction with senior management.
    • Analyze and address issues that have the potential to jeopardize project success.
    • Proactively identify needed changes in work scope and ensure appropriate planning measures are taken to assess, renegotiate, and amend projects as required.
    • Manage budgets and expenditures related to facilities maintenance and improvements.
  • Space Management
    • Work with the facilities management team, departments, and external partners to organize, manage, and track space assignments and use.
    • Plan for and manage space needs for instructional space, research space, and office space.
    • Develop needs assessments, long-range space planning, modeling, and data analysis.
    • Support negotiation and implementation of space assignments.
    • Develop and execute phasing plans for relocation based on physical space requirements.
  • General
    • Maintain effective communication within the organization, with departments, and project team members.
    • Interact with colleagues and external partners in a manner that builds productive relationships.
    • Initiate improvements for processes as related to space planning, facilities, and associated business areas.
    • Perform other activities as required.
    Requirements
    • Education
      • Bachelor's degree.
    • Experience
      • At least two years of experience in planning, design, and development, architecture, historical preservation/conservation.
    • Licensure
      • Professional registration in architecture or engineering is desirable.
      • Certification as a LEED Accredited Professional may be beneficial.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Significant experience related to project management, operations, logistics, construction, and facilities management.
    • Strong communication skills, verbal and written, for effectively communicating within all levels of the organization.
    • Strong initiative, self-motivation, flexibility, and interest in achieving creative solutions in all areas of facilities and logistics.
    • Dedication to the organization and to excellence in project delivery and customer service.
    Work Environment

This is a primarily sedentary job, involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job requires frequent travel around the university grounds to visit facilities and occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings and programs.
