About the Role

Hollins University seeks a seasoned communications professional to lead its external relations and editorial content efforts. As Director of External Relations and Editorial Content, you will be responsible for advancing the university's reputation and building recognition among various constituencies, including alumnae/i, donors, employers, academia, prospective and current students, faculty, and staff.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in media relations, branding, marketing, and storytelling, with a proven track record of success in navigating complex, high-visibility issues. You will be responsible for developing and implementing a proactive and strategic communication, media relations, and reputation management plan, as well as providing support and direct consultation in leading an effective crisis and issues management program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy to advance the university's reputation and build recognition among various constituencies
  • Provide strategic media counsel to campus communicators and administrators on local, regional, state, and national issues
  • Collaborate with the executive director and other senior leaders to build proactive strategies and execute rapid responses to time-sensitive issues
  • Lead outreach efforts for educational stakeholders and prospective students, including assisting with outreach communications and developing content published on Hollins print materials, websites, and social media
  • Actively monitor both existing and emerging campus, local, regional, state, national, and international issues and proactively ensure the institution communicates positions on various issues to media and other stakeholders
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the university and provide strategic media counsel to campus communicators and administrators
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with local and top media organizations and individual journalists
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or related field
  • Minimum of five years of experience in media relations, with a strong background in branding, marketing, and storytelling
  • Proven track record of success in navigating complex, high-visibility issues
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, verbal communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to conduct interviews, complete research, and produce compelling written and multimedia content
  • Strong attention to details and accuracy
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with flexibility with changing priorities and assignments
