Job Summary

Ports America is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Marine Operations Manager to lead the planning and supervision of terminal operations and staff. The successful candidate will be a subject matter expert with the ability to lead, delegate, and mentor positively, instilling confidence with customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operational Leadership: Assume a lead role in managing the company's vessel side operations, including training, mentoring, and developing interns and existing staff within the department.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure labor and staff comply with accident prevention and safety programs and procedures, lead safety committees, and manage safety audits.
  • Business Development: Develop short-range business plans to achieve company goals and objectives while operating within approved fiscal budgets.
  • Cost Management: Identify areas of cost reduction, lead and support operational excellence initiatives, and determine the amount of labor needed for each day.
  • Payroll and Labor Management: Ensure payroll accuracy, make appropriate changes as needed, and determine additional staffing or labor needs.
  • Operational Planning: Develop, review, and approve efficient operational plans for all areas, work closely with M&R/Terminal Departments, and ensure the appropriate equipment allocation meets operational demands.
  • Performance Management: Demonstrate and maintain positive relations with labor, ensure the Collective Bargaining Agreements are understood and adhered to, and review and evaluate the performance of employees under their supervision.
  • Communication and Training: Participate in regular training and feedback to labor and management staff, communicate areas of accountability and performance expectations, and develop, communicate, maintain, and improve operating and administrative procedures.
Requirements
  • Education: High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience: 3+ years of port terminal operations leadership experience
  • Skills: Advanced experience with terminal computerized operating systems, advanced knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations, and valid US Driver's License
  • Certifications: Obtain a TWIC Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree or higher
  • Skills: Advanced labor relations knowledge, ability to interpret CBA and make arguments to union on conflicts, and solid understanding of how decisions will impact P&L
  • Leadership: Leads and challenges decisions, ability to step in for Ops/Site Mgr. when needed, and able to communicate effectively with shippers/customers/Port
Physical Working Attributes
  • Physical Demands: Climb up and down a ladder on a vessel multiple times within a shift, work on ships and terminal with engine equipment, work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions, and work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast-moving equipment.
  • Physical Abilities: Lift, push, and/or pull up to 30lbs.
