Primary Objective of the Role:

A certified surgical specialist supports the surgeon and other healthcare professionals in executing Operating Room and Surgical tasks. Assisted care is provided under the direct oversight of the professional operating room nurse. The patient demographic includes infants, children, adolescents, and adults.

  • Consults with the surgeon prior to procedures regarding any expected variances.
  • Possesses knowledge of setup and operation of service equipment.
  • Utilizes sterilizers effectively and can articulate knowledge of systems.
  • Ensures a safe environment for the patient, physician, and staff at the sterile field, as well as throughout the OR.
  • Prepares the room appropriately for procedures.
  • Considers patient size when selecting supplies and equipment.
  • Clears the room post-procedure while adhering to standard precautions.
  • Assists the surgical team before, during, and after surgical interventions, including cleanup and patient transport as needed.
  • Contributes to the maintenance, care, and cleanliness of the department, supplies, equipment, and instruments.
  • Handles instruments and equipment in a manner that minimizes breakage and damage.
  • Reports any damage or breakage and removes items from use.
  • Transports instruments back to decontamination in closed carts following procedures.
  • Is knowledgeable about process improvement initiatives in the unit and assists as requested.
  • Participates in staff meetings regularly.
  • Engages in self-directed learning activities to maintain and enhance competency.
Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology Program.
  • Pediatric scrub tech experience is preferred.
Certifications and Licenses:
  • Current national certification as a surgical technologist, or within 180 days of graduation if a new graduate.
  • Graduation from a surgical technologist program and employment as a surgical technologist prior to 2009 in lieu of certification.
  • Completion of a surgical technology training program in the military or public health service of the US.
  • CPR certification.
