POSITION OVERVIEW:
This role involves assisting under the guidance of a surgeon in tasks such as exposure, hemostasis, and other intraoperative technical functions that support the surgeon in executing a safe procedure with optimal outcomes for the patient. Responsibilities may include administering local anesthetics at the surgical site and participating in volume replacement or autotransfusion techniques as necessary. The position also entails assisting with the cleaning and preparation of the operating room.
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Credentialed by the LCC-ST or NSAA as a certified first assistant/certified surgical assistant or certified surgical technologist, having graduated from an accredited program with proof of eligibility to take the certification exam.
- Preferred: CST with current certification and two (2) years of first assisting experience.
- CST with current certification who has completed an approved first assistant/surgical assistant program.
- Must demonstrate sensitivity to cultural and bilingual issues.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians.
- Hospital experience is preferred.
- Current BLS certification is required.
- NRP certification within six (6) months of hire for Women's Hospital employees.
- Flexibility in work scheduling is necessary.
• Six (6) months to one (1) year of continuous experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), Certified First Assistant (CFA), or Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA).- Proficient organizational and computer skills are required.
• Excellent customer service skills are essential.- High degree of competency/experience in general.
- Good communication and organizational skills are required.
- Requires reasoning ability and sound independent judgment.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Uphold the facility's mission, vision, and values by effectively communicating them to others.
• Determine specific equipment required for each surgical procedure.
• Review permits to confirm procedures and special requirements, participating in the "time out" process.
• Appropriately select and place diagnostic tests for reference.
• Assist in patient positioning and movement.
• Insert and remove foley urinary catheters as needed.
• Properly place pneumatic tourniquets.
• Confirm procedures with the surgeon.
• Drapes the patient according to the surgeon's guidelines.
• Provide retraction of tissues and organs for optimal visualization using appropriate instruments and techniques.
• Assist in maintaining hemostasis through various methods as directed by the surgeon.
• Utilize unipolar and bipolar electrocautery as required.
• Harvest saphenous veins per the surgeon's directive.
• Maintain the integrity of the sterile field.
• Close wound layers as directed by the surgeon.
• Insert drainage tubes as per the surgeon's instructions.
• Apply wound pressure appropriately.
• Assist in patient resuscitation during cardiac arrest or other critical situations in the operating room.
• Insert femoral arterial lines under the surgeon's directive.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

CUSTOMER SERVICE:
Deliver exceptional customer service to all DHR customers. All employees are required to participate in the DHR C.A.R.E.S program, which outlines the principles of Customer Service including: Commitment, Accountability, Respect, Excellence, and Service.
AGE SPECIFIC:
Employees must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in their assigned unit. The individual must show understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the necessary information to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The individual spends over 95% of their time in an air-conditioned environment with varying noise levels. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position involves minimal exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some exposure to cleansing agents.
OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE:
This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is classified as OSHA Category III. Individuals in this role are not expected to perform emergency medical care or first aid as part of their employment.
