Reports To: Plant Manager
OVERVIEW
The Operations Leader plays a pivotal role in overseeing daily activities within manufacturing departments, reporting directly to the Plant Manager. This position is essential for establishing, maintaining, and ensuring adherence to all necessary protocols related to safety, quality, cost efficiency, and timely delivery. The ideal candidate will exhibit personal attributes conducive to effective leadership and fostering positive customer relations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Directly manage the manufacturing operations of a Tier 1 Automotive ductile iron green sand foundry.
- Oversee the formulation and attainment of departmental Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) encompassing safety, quality, Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), operational costs, and delivery timelines.
- Analyze discrepancies against plans and collaborate with the management team to implement corrective measures.
- Facilitate coordination between manufacturing and support teams, developing annual policy deployment and tactical actions as required.
- Lead cross-functional teams, addressing obstacles to achieve plant objectives and goals.
- Foster a cohesive management team dedicated to safety, quality, delivery, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure a skilled and engaged workforce that consistently meets production targets while prioritizing safety and quality through active plant floor management.
- Participate in feasibility and launch meetings, review tooling and gating designs, follow up on test results, and monitor casting sample progress.
- Manage the flow of castings through the department, collaborating with the quality team to secure proper casting releases and certifications, while maintaining adequate inventory levels.
- Utilize quality tools for problem evaluation, root cause identification, corrective action implementation, and effectiveness verification through a Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) approach.
- Engage the management team in continuous improvement initiatives with support from industrial engineering and the Continuous Improvement (CI) manager.
- Maintain and promote strong employee-management relationships, participating in labor-management meetings and addressing grievances.
- Administer annual targets with monthly performance reviews, providing direct feedback and coaching to meet plant goals while strongly supporting the team.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive manufacturing operations business plans, including program requirements, labor hours, cycle times, production costs, and overall image.
Required Skills:
- Exceptional team-building, decision-making, communication, and people management abilities.
- Proven experience in fostering a culture of continuous improvement utilizing Six Sigma and/or Lean/TPS methodologies.
- Excellent planning and organizational skills, capable of balancing production and maintenance demands.
- Experience in root cause analysis and problem-solving using the PDCA cycle.
- Preferred experience in green sand foundry operations.
- Technical degree is advantageous.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
This role operates in a dynamic environment requiring timely decision-making and effective communication to optimize resource utilization. The automotive industry often presents shifting priorities, necessitating adaptability to meet expectations. The position involves working in an office setting with frequent exposure to the production floor, which may include noise, odors, dust, drafts, chemicals, operating machinery, and temperature variations. Extended periods of walking and standing may be necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree or 10 years of experience in an automotive leadership role.
- 5 years of operational leadership experience in Tier 1 automotive manufacturing.
- 5 years of demonstrated experience with TPS/lean methodologies.
- Proven ability to communicate effectively (both written and oral) at all organizational levels.
- Ability to work efficiently in a dynamic team environment.
