Position Overview

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) is integral to the functioning of our Clinical Laboratory. This role encompasses the execution of complex laboratory tests on patient samples, adherence to quality control and assurance protocols, accurate reporting of patient outcomes, and compliance with all relevant local, state, and federal laboratory regulations.

Successful candidates will exhibit strong communication abilities, adeptness at managing multiple responsibilities concurrently, and the flexibility to adapt to diverse tasks and schedules. The role requires the ability to work independently while also contributing to a collaborative team environment.

This is a part-time position for a six-month contract, with the potential for transition to a full-time, permanent role. The schedule consists of 28 hours per week, from Tuesday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory tests and analyses in accordance with established standard operating procedures.
  • Review, interpret, and document patient results in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Supervise unlicensed personnel during various laboratory processes.
  • Independently identify and resolve complex issues affecting test performance.
  • Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment as per standard operating procedures.
  • Document and review laboratory quality control processes.
  • Record corrective actions taken when laboratory performance deviates from established standards.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and communicate them to laboratory management.
  • Assist in training new laboratory staff.
  • Support internal audits and preparation for inspections as required.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of laboratory supplies and prepare necessary reagents for testing.
  • Conduct reagent qualification according to approved protocols.
  • Draft and update standard operating procedures.
  • Perform additional laboratory duties as assigned and assist colleagues as time permits.
  • Engage in projects, provide updates on progress, and fulfill assignments.
  • Report any concerns regarding test quality or safety to the appropriate supervisory personnel.

Qualifications

  • Valid Clinical Laboratory Scientist license in California.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science, Clinical Science, or a related field.
  • Experience in a high-complexity clinical laboratory environment is preferred.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal laboratory regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and the ability to handle potentially hazardous materials.
  • Proficient in laboratory information systems (LIS), Microsoft Office Suite, and Google applications.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced setting.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, adhering to good documentation practices.
  • Capable of executing tasks with minimal supervision while fostering a collaborative atmosphere.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks with a focus on quality and timeliness.
  • Proactively drive projects and contribute innovative solutions for process enhancements.
  • Participate in projects, provide updates, and complete assignments as expected.

Work Environment

  • Work hours and days may vary based on operational requirements.
  • Extended periods of standing or sitting may be necessary.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials, specimens, and laboratory equipment is possible.
  • Repetitive manual pipetting may be required.
