Overview:

The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting clinical analyses in designated areas such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, including quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory instruments. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for alerting medical personnel regarding results. Additionally, this position involves clerical, general, and phlebotomy tasks essential for daily laboratory operations. The technician also manages the provision of blood products as requested by healthcare providers.

Key Responsibilities:


• Adheres to the OneCHRISTUS Competencies: Leader of Self, Leader of Others, or Leader of Leaders.

• Ensures that the organization’s philosophy and core values are reflected in the services provided to clients.

• Specimen Collection/Handling/Processing – collects blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; operates pneumatic tube systems; follows protocols for processing and testing specimens, including the use of various centrifuges; obtains other specified patient specimens as outlined in procedural manuals.

• Result Reporting – identifies errors or unlikely results and takes appropriate measures; reports critical values according to established policies; performs tests within designated timeframes; conducts laboratory testing in sections such as Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing of blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers in accordance with established protocols.

• Performs, analyzes, and documents quality control in compliance with policies and procedures following CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; conducts and records Performance Improvement metrics and communicates findings.

• Engages in established daily and periodic preventative maintenance with appropriate documentation; troubleshoots minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies/reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards those that are expired.

• Takes initiative for professional development and ongoing education.

• Assists in the training of new staff and students in laboratory procedures.

• Complies with CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations.

• Follows established safety protocols, infection control measures, security guidelines, and procedures for handling hazardous materials.

• Utilizes Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Completes annual competency assessments successfully and within the assigned timeframe.

Qualifications:

A. Education/Skills

  • Associates Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience as defined by CLIA regulations.
  • Completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration, holding the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician).

OR

  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including a minimum of 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours in science courses comprising six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

AND

  • Laboratory training including completion of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another organization approved by HHS, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.

B. Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by NAACLS or other organizations approved by HHS.

OR

  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including a clinical rotation through the following laboratory sections: Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years.

C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • State Licensure may be required in certain locations.
  • New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, where applicable).
