The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting clinical analyses in designated areas such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all tasks essential for delivering precise and prompt results, including quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory instruments. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for communicating results to healthcare professionals. Additionally, the role involves clerical, general, and phlebotomy tasks related to the laboratory's daily functions, as well as the provision of blood products as requested by medical personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

• Specimen Collection and Processing – accurately collect blood specimens through venipuncture or fingerstick, ensuring proper identification and labeling; manage pneumatic tube systems; follow established procedures for specimen processing and testing, including the operation of centrifuges.

• Result Reporting – identify and rectify errors or unlikely results; report critical values according to established policies; conduct tests within designated timeframes across various laboratory sections including Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, and Microbiology; perform blood bank procedures such as crossmatching and dispensing blood products; operate laboratory analyzers following established protocols.

• Quality Control – perform and document quality control measures in compliance with CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; monitor and report performance improvement indicators.

• Preventative Maintenance – conduct daily and periodic maintenance of laboratory equipment, troubleshoot minor issues, and initiate service requests as necessary; manage inventory of supplies and reagents, ensuring proper documentation and disposal of expired materials.

• Professional Development – take initiative for ongoing professional growth and education; assist in training new staff and students in laboratory procedures.

• Compliance – adhere to all safety, infection control, and hazardous material protocols; utilize laboratory information systems (LIS) and health information systems (HIS) effectively to manage and report laboratory results.

• Complete annual competency assessments within designated timelines.

Qualifications:

A. Education and Skills

  • Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent training and experience as per CLIA regulations.
  • Completion of a U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration, with the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist.

OR

  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including a minimum of 24 semester hours in medical laboratory technology courses or science courses with specified chemistry and biology credits.

AND

  • Laboratory training through completion of an accredited clinical laboratory training program or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty for high complexity testing.

B. Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of an accredited clinical laboratory training program.

OR

  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including rotations in Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids within the last five years.

C. Licenses and Certifications

  • State licensure may be required based on location.
  • New graduates must achieve Board Certification within one year of hire, with specific exceptions.
