Overview:

The Medical Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting clinical tests in designated areas such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all tasks necessary for delivering precise and timely results, including quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician identifies abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for notifying the medical team of results. Additionally, clerical, general, and phlebotomy tasks related to daily laboratory operations are performed, including the provision of blood products as required by healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

• Specimen Collection/Handling/Processing – proficiently obtains blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; operates pneumatic tube systems; follows protocols for specimen processing and testing, including the use of various centrifuges; collects other designated patient specimens as outlined in procedure manuals.

• Result Reporting – identifies errors or unlikely results and takes necessary actions; reports critical values according to established policies; performs tests within designated timeframes; conducts laboratory testing in sections such as Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; executes blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing of blood products; operates laboratory automated analyzers in accordance with established protocols.

• Conducts, analyzes, and documents quality control in compliance with policies and procedures, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards; performs and records performance improvement metrics and reports findings.

• Executes daily and periodic preventative maintenance with appropriate documentation; troubleshoots minor issues and initiates service requests as necessary; manages inventory of supplies/reagents; reviews policy and procedure manuals; dates reagents and discards expired materials.

• Takes initiative for professional development and ongoing education.

• Assists in the training of new associates and students in laboratory procedures.

• Complies with CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA regulations.

• Follows established safety protocols, infection control measures, security guidelines, and procedures for handling hazardous materials.

• Utilizes Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS) effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Successfully completes annual competency assessments by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

A. Education/Skills

  • Associates Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA requirements.
  • Completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration and currently holds the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician).

OR

  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including at least 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses that encompass six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

AND

  • Laboratory training that includes completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another organization approved by HHS, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.

B. Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by NAACLS or other organizations approved by HHS.

OR

  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including a clinical rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years.

C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • State licensure may be required in certain locations.
  • New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, where applicable).
