Overview:

The Clinical Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting diagnostic testing across various laboratory sections, including general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. This role encompasses all necessary tasks to ensure precise and prompt results, such as quality assurance, performance enhancement, proficiency evaluations, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. The technician is also trained to identify abnormal critical values and adheres to established protocols for communicating results to the medical team. Additionally, the role includes clerical tasks, general duties, and phlebotomy related to the daily functions of the laboratory. The technician will also manage the provision of blood products as required by healthcare professionals.

Key Responsibilities:

• Specimen Collection and Management – proficiently obtain blood specimens through venipuncture and/or fingerstick, ensuring accurate identification and labeling; manage pneumatic tube systems; adhere to protocols for processing and testing specimens, including operating various centrifuges; collect other designated patient specimens as outlined in procedural manuals.

• Result Management – identify errors or improbable results and take corrective actions; report critical values according to established policies; conduct tests within designated timeframes; perform laboratory testing in sections such as Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology; execute blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and dispensing of blood products; operate laboratory automated analyzers in accordance with established protocols.

• Quality Control – execute, analyze, and document quality control measures in compliance with policies and procedures, adhering to CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO guidelines; perform and document performance improvement metrics and report findings.

• Preventative Maintenance – conduct routine and periodic maintenance with appropriate documentation; troubleshoot minor issues and initiate service requests as necessary; manage inventory of supplies/reagents; review policy and procedure manuals; date reagents and discard expired materials.

• Professional Development – take initiative for personal and professional growth through continued education.

• Training – assist in the orientation and training of new associates and students in laboratory practices.

• Compliance – adhere to CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards.

• Safety Protocols – follow established safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous materials handling protocols.

• Laboratory Information Systems – utilize LIS and HIS computer systems effectively to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.

• Competency Assessment – successfully complete annual competency assessments by the designated deadline.

Qualifications:

A. Education and Skills

  • Associate's Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA requirements.
  • Completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks duration, holding the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist (laboratory technician).

OR

  • 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including at least 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses that encompass six semester hours of chemistry, six semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination.

AND

  • Laboratory training that includes completion of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS-approved organization, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty where high complexity testing is performed.

B. Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of a clinical laboratory training program accredited by NAACLS or other HHS-approved organizations.

OR

  • Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including a clinical rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids in the U.S. or with an accredited laboratory within the last five years.

C. Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • State licensure may be required depending on location.
  • New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible (must complete Board Certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded).
