Compensation Range:

Salary is determined based on the role's requirements and level. It may also be influenced by your educational background and experience, as well as internal equity and market data. Typically, new hires start at the lower to mid-range of the salary scale.

Salary: $24.89 per hour, depending on experience.

Role Summary:

A certified peer support specialist is an individual with significant life experiences, often referred to as "lived experience." These specialists provide support to individuals facing challenges related to mental health, trauma, or substance use. Their unique insights offer a level of expertise that traditional training cannot replicate. The Peer Support Specialist (PSS) is someone who has previously received mental health or substance use disorder services and has achieved substantial recovery, enabling them to assist others on their recovery journey.

Educational Requirements: Candidates must fulfill the following Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Certified Peer Support Specialist criteria:

  • Submit an OHA application to the Office of Equity and Inclusion (OEI).
  • Pass a criminal history background check conducted by the OHA background check unit (BCU).
  • Complete a 40-hour PSST training approved by the Oregon Health Authority to qualify as a Certified Peer Support Specialist under the Traditional Health Worker (THW) program.

Experience Requirements: Candidates should demonstrate competencies in identifying triggering events:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must not be listed on the Medicaid provider exclusion list.
  • Must identify as a peer under one or more of the following categories:
  • A self-identified individual currently or formerly receiving mental health services; or
  • A self-identified individual in recovery from an addiction disorder, meeting the abstinence criteria for staff in alcohol and drug treatment programs (2 years); and
  • Successfully complete the required training from an OHA-approved program for Peer Support Specialists.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage with assigned peers in various settings, including home visits, community locations, treatment facilities, and office visits, to establish and nurture a trusting relationship.
  • Provide emotional support and a reassuring presence in medical clinic settings.
  • Participate in group sessions to foster client growth and recovery.
  • Assist clients in identifying personal recovery goals through the creation of a Personal Recovery Plan.
  • Support clients in overcoming barriers to independence, including skill-building in budgeting, transportation arrangements, healthcare appointments, and accessing benefits.
  • Offer follow-up support to connect individuals with community resources that promote stability and autonomy.

Ethical Conduct: Certified Peer Support Specialists must adhere to the NCC AP NCPRSS Code of Ethics, which includes:

  • Maintaining a minimum of two (2) clinical supervision sessions monthly, totaling at least 2 hours of documented supervision.
  • Accurately representing qualifications, expertise, and certifications to clients and the public.
  • Making truthful public statements that reflect current and accurate information.
  • Remaining substance-free to ensure the ability to perform duties effectively.
  • Recognizing personal issues that may impact performance as a PSS.
  • Engaging in regular supervision and support to address challenging personal issues.
  • Respecting the contributions of others and giving appropriate credit in research contexts.
  • Maintaining required documentation for client records in compliance with KBBH and federal regulations.
  • Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of clients in accordance with federal and state laws.
  • Using client contact information in line with agency policy.
  • Not establishing a private practice.

Certificates and Licenses: A valid Oregon driver's license and a clean driving record are required, as driving is an essential function of this position. Proof of insurance must be submitted to the HR department and must remain current.
