Position Summary

The role involves performing skilled medical support duties within a correctional environment, focusing on the health assessments of inmates. Responsibilities include assisting medical professionals, gathering health information, maintaining accurate records, administering medications, and preparing reports as necessary. The position operates under the guidance of a Registered Nurse or designated supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Conducts health screenings and assessments for inmates; performs initial medical evaluations for new arrivals; compiles medical histories and addresses inquiries from inmates.
  2. Dispenses medications to inmates; collaborates with physicians regarding inmate health conditions; liaises with healthcare providers concerning prescriptions.
  3. Supports the Jail physician with health evaluations and sick call procedures; orders and interprets laboratory tests, x-rays, and other diagnostic results; communicates significant findings to the physician and inmates.
  4. Coordinates with the Jail physician to establish diagnosis and treatment plans; delivers medical care as directed by the physician.
  5. Reviews and prioritizes daily medical requests for immediate and routine care; organizes and schedules inmate appointments with healthcare professionals.
  6. Maintains and updates inmate medical records; prepares documentation for transfers and discharges.
  7. Administers health screenings and vaccination clinics for inmates and staff.
  8. Manages inventory of medical supplies and places orders as needed.
  9. Addresses inmate grievances and refers them to the appropriate personnel for resolution.
  10. Promotes a culture of exceptional customer service within the facility.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Comprehensive understanding of nursing principles, emergency medical services, and related practices; knowledge of medication management and the associated risks; familiarity with medical treatment protocols for patients in a correctional setting; ability to maintain accurate medical records and prepare necessary reports; capability to foster effective working relationships with inmates, healthcare providers, and staff.

Education and Experience

Associate's or Technical degree in practical nursing or emergency medical services, or a related field, along with relevant experience in emergency and practical nursing care, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Demands

This position may require occasional physical exertion of up to 10 pounds; regular communication, both verbal and written; frequent standing, walking, and sitting; and occasional exposure to various environmental conditions.

Special Requirements

Must possess a current license as a Practical Nurse or Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic in the State of Georgia. First Aid and CPR certifications are required upon hire. Additional safety training or certifications may be necessary. A favorable background check is required.
